Biochem cuts packaging materials with feed additive sack redesign

Optimized paper sacks reduce excess packaging space and cut annual material use by 27 metric tons.

GERMANY – Animal nutrition company Biochem has redesigned its paper sack packaging for feed additives and dietary supplements, reducing material use while improving pallet stability and transport efficiency.

Implemented in the first quarter of 2026, the new sack dimensions align more closely with product volumes, reducing unused space inside the packaging.

Based on Biochem’s 2025 consumption data, the redesign is expected to cut annual use by approximately 16 tonnes of paper and 11 tonnes of foil.

The more compact sacks are also designed to improve pallet stability during transportation and increase the amount of product that can be accommodated within available freight space.

“By changing the physical dimensions of our sacks, we are tackling material waste at the source while simultaneously enhancing the transport efficiency and handling safety of our products for our partners worldwide.”

The company said the material savings are structural, meaning efficiency gains will increase in line with future production volumes.

Feed additives supply chains target resource efficiency

The packaging redesign reflects a wider focus among animal nutrition companies on reducing resource use beyond feed additive formulation and production.

Packaging can affect both the volume of materials used and the efficiency of transporting products through global supply chains. 

More compact packaging can improve pallet utilisation and reduce unused freight capacity, potentially lowering the resources required to move products between manufacturing sites, distributors and customers.

Biochem said it is incorporating resource efficiency into the continuous review of its supply chain processes.

“Every workflow across our supply chain is subject to continuous review,” Ayecke-Thun said. 

“These optimisations ensure that as our global footprint expands, our environmental footprint per unit continues to shrink.”

The redesigned sacks are now in full production at Biochem’s manufacturing facility in Lohne, Germany, with the updated packaging being introduced across international markets.

The company specialises in feed additives and dietary supplements for animal nutrition, supplying products to livestock and other animal production sectors worldwide.
