Nutreco scales intelligent shrimp farming platform as price volatility pressures producers

NETHERLANDS – Nutreco, a leading animal nutrition company, has significantly expanded its intelligent aquaculture ecosystem through Eruvaka, as shrimp producers worldwide face mounting pressure from sustained price volatility and rising operational risks.

The company said Eruvaka’s connected aquaculture systems are now operating across 12 countries, supporting around 20,000 shrimp harvests annually and managing more than 45,000 hectares of shrimp ponds through integrated monitoring and feeding technologies.

More than 60,000 intelligent feeding devices are currently in operation globally, making it one of the largest installed bases of intelligent feeding systems in shrimp aquaculture.

In 2025 alone, nearly 480,000 metric tonnes of feed passed through Eruvaka-connected systems, while approximately 370,000 metric tonnes of shrimp, valued at US$1.25 billion, were produced on the platform.

The expansion comes as global shrimp farmers continue to battle weak shrimp prices, disease outbreaks, rising feed costs and tighter margins, forcing producers to seek technologies that improve efficiency and reduce losses.

“Shrimp farming has become an AI and data-driven business and there is no margin for error,” said Kunal Choudhary.

“Technology on its own does not solve volatility. The real impact comes from integrating intelligent feeding systems with biological expertise, farmer’s experience, feed formulation and strong local advisory support. 

That ecosystem enables farmers to make faster, more informed decisions in challenging market conditions,” he added.

Precision feeding gains traction in shrimp sector

Nutreco said farmers using its integrated precision aquaculture approach in selected markets have achieved biomass increases of 40-60%, alongside improvements in feed efficiency and farm profitability of 20-40%.

Field studies also showed carbon footprint reductions of up to 10-30% through optimised feeding practices and real-time pond management.

The Eruvaka platform combines AI-based sonic feeding technology, automated feeders, water-quality monitoring systems and a digital farm management platform designed to support real-time decision-making.

Unlike standalone aquaculture technologies, Nutreco integrates Eruvaka within Skretting’s nutrition and advisory services, linking farm data with feed programs, applied research and technical support.

Nutreco first partnered with Eruvaka in 2018 before acquiring full ownership in 2023 as part of its strategy to strengthen digital aquaculture solutions across the feed-to-farm value chain.

The company said the continued expansion reflects broader industry shifts toward AI-supported aquaculture management as producers increasingly prioritise precision feeding, real-time monitoring and data-driven production systems to improve survival rates and profitability.

Global shrimp farming has experienced prolonged price instability over the past two years due to oversupply in some markets, weaker consumer demand, and rising production costs, particularly in Asia and Latin America, which together dominate global shrimp exports.
