Redstone raises US$29M to back next-generation blue economy technologies

The Nordic-focused fund will finance pre-seed to Series A companies developing maritime and ocean technologies.

EUROPE – Redstone has raised €25 million (US$29 million) at the first close of its Redstone Blue Venture Fund, targeting early-stage technologies across maritime transport, ports, ocean infrastructure, clean energy, water and marine data as investment in the global blue economy expands.

The Nordic-focused fund, which has a broader European investment mandate, will provide financing from pre-seed through Series A to companies developing technologies aimed at modernising maritime and ocean-based industries.

The first close was backed by angel investors, family offices, foundations, institutions and companies linked to the maritime sector, including the City of Turku, Meriaura Invest, Aboa Advest, LähiTapiola, Kelonia, Rausanne, Adamo Capital and ARGOng Investment AG.

Redstone launched the fund in 2025, with its investment strategy covering four areas: maritime and ports, energy, water technologies, and marine data and observation.

Blue economy financing gap has relevance for Africa

Although Redstone Blue is primarily focused on European companies, its investment approach highlights a financing gap that is also emerging across Africa’s coastal economies.

African countries have significant economic dependence on ocean-related industries, including fisheries, ports, shipping, tourism and coastal trade.

At the same time, newer areas such as marine technology, aquaculture, ocean data, renewable energy and water technologies remain relatively underdeveloped.

Early-stage businesses in these sectors can face particular difficulty accessing capital.

Venture investors often seek scalable businesses with clear commercial returns, while development finance institutions frequently focus on larger infrastructure projects or more established companies.

This can leave technology startups in ports, fisheries, water management and coastal infrastructure without suitable financing during their early development stages.

Redstone Blue’s pre-seed-to-Series-A model shows how specialised capital can target this part of the investment cycle.

The fund’s initial investments will range from €200,000 to €2 million, according to Redstone.

Africa is also beginning to build a pipeline of businesses operating in similar areas.

The European Union’s BlueInvest Africa programme is preparing to connect 25 African startups and SMEs with international investors in Cape Town in November 2026.

The selected companies operate across areas including ocean technology, sustainable fisheries, marine renewable energy and circular-economy solutions.

For African coastal economies, access to specialised early-stage capital could support technologies designed to improve port efficiency, maritime intelligence, fisheries management, aquaculture and water resource management.

Ports are particularly important.

They connect African agricultural, mineral and manufactured exports to global markets, but congestion, ageing infrastructure and inefficient logistics continue to affect competitiveness.

Digitalisation, automation, predictive maintenance and cleaner maritime technologies could help address some of these challenges.

Water technologies could also have wider applications as African cities face growing pressure on freshwater resources.

Solutions covering water treatment, purification, monitoring and resource efficiency could support both urban and industrial development.

Developing blue-economy businesses will, however, require more than venture capital.

Startups need access to research institutions, skilled workers, testing facilities, customers and regulatory frameworks that can support commercial deployment.

Redstone’s fund does not directly finance African companies, but its first close highlights the growing recognition of ocean and water technologies as a distinct investment opportunity.
