GFLI prepares environmental data tool for marine ingredients

GFLI and LCA.no will host a launch webinar on 15 September 2026, featuring a live demonstration of DIG and a question-and-answer session.

NORWAY – The Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) and LCA.no are preparing to launch the Data-in Generator (DIG), a cloud-based tool designed to help marine ingredient producers generate environmental data without requiring specialist life cycle assessment expertise.

The tool is scheduled to launch in September 2026 with funding from the Norwegian Seafood Research Fund (FHF).

According to the organisations, DIG is designed to comply with both GFLI’s methodology and the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodologies for marine fish products and feed for food-producing animals.

The platform will allow users to collect and model environmental data, generate product environmental footprints, identify emissions hotspots and track changes in environmental performance over time.

Data generated through the platform can also be prepared for publication in the GFLI database, while producers can contribute data to improve secondary and average environmental figures for the sector.

“The tool has been a highly anticipated enrichment to the GFLI infrastructure to provide GFLI members and upstream producers an easy-to-work solution towards the growing pressures of environmental reporting,” said Laura Nobel, Manager at GFLI.

Environmental reporting moves closer to feed producers

The launch comes as environmental data and life cycle assessment become increasingly important across the feed and aquaculture value chains.

For feed manufacturers, access to consistent environmental data on raw materials can help improve product footprint calculations and identify stages of production with the greatest environmental impact.

LCA.no is providing the technical infrastructure behind DIG, drawing on its experience developing digital systems for environmental product declarations and life cycle assessments.

“We see many companies want to work more systematically with environmental documentation, but find the process complex and time-consuming,” said Cato Hansen, Key Account Manager at LCA.no.

“Together with GFLI, we can make this work simpler, more structured and far more scalable for the marine sector.”

The platform is intended for both smaller producers managing limited datasets and larger companies with extensive product portfolios. 

It can also be used by fisheries, research organisations and industry associations working with environmental data.

GFLI and LCA.no said discussions are underway to expand the tool beyond marine ingredients to cover other feed ingredients, including cultivated, speciality, processed plant-based and animal-based ingredients.

A free online training course will accompany the tool to help users prepare their data and use the platform.
