Chemlock Nutrition introduces next-generation solution for transition cow health

The company aims to provide dairy farms with a tool that addresses the biological complexities of the transition period during lactation.

USA – Chemlock Nutrition, an American animal nutrition company, has launched CalBal® [Pro], a next-generation dietary solution designed to combat dyscalcemia and improve transition cow performance.

The innovation, now available nationwide, builds on the success of Nutricow CalBal and aims to simplify herd management while boosting productivity for dairy operations.

Dyscalcemia, a condition defined by low blood calcium levels in dairy cows around four days postpartum, is a widespread and costly issue in the industry.

It often leads to reduced milk output, poor reproductive outcomes, and increased susceptibility to health problems. Holstein cows are particularly at risk, making reliable prevention strategies a priority for dairy producers.

A more efficient formula

According to Chemlock, CalBal [Pro] is more concentrated than its predecessor, allowing for lower feed rates while reducing shipping, storage, and handling costs.

The product is manufactured through a vertically integrated, patent-pending process utilising the company’s proprietary CaP Matrix Technology, which helps maintain calcium balance and reduces the risk of dyscalcemia.

Transition cow health has always been one of the most challenging and costly hurdles for dairy operations,” said Rick Brown, Dairy Science Director at Chemlock Nutrition. “CalBal® [Pro] gives producers a simpler, more reliable way to manage their herds without the burden of urine pH testing, sourcing low-potassium forage, or relying on costly calcium boluses.

Each CalBal® [Pro] pellet is uniformly infused with Nutrilock® Chromium, which research has shown to improve immune function, increase dry matter intake, and enhance energy efficiency. These benefits translate into greater milk production and stronger herd performance throughout lactation.

Practical benefits for the farm

Chemlock Nutrition emphasises that the solution delivers value for both producers and nutritionists. For producers, CalBal® [Pro] eliminates the need for urine pH testing, reduces dependence on specialised low-potassium forage, and cuts down calcium bolus expenses.

For nutritionists, it provides a consistent and scientifically validated approach to transition cow management.

The company notes that incorporating CalBal® [Pro] into prepartum diets for 18 to 24 days helps prepare cows for lactation by ensuring proper calcium metabolism while minimising the risks associated with elevated phosphorus intake.

Studies have linked excess dietary phosphorus before calving to higher incidences of milk fever, further underlining the importance of balanced formulations.

Commitment to innovation

Founded by MIT chemists, Chemlock Nutrition positions itself as an elemental science company focused on advancing animal health while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint.

Its portfolio spans dairy, beef, swine, and poultry, with multiple international quality and safety certifications, including FAMI QS, cGMP, HACCP, and ISO 22000.

By launching CalBal® [Pro], the company aims to provide dairy farms with a tool that not only addresses the biological complexities of the transition period but also eases the management challenges that weigh heavily on labour and resources.

CalBal® [Pro] underscores our commitment to delivering solutions that are both scientifically validated and practical on the farm,” Brown said. “With growing pressures on labour, efficiency, and herd health, this product represents real-world value for today’s dairy operations.
