Tietjen mills, which operate at speeds exceeding 3,000 rpm, are used in over 50 countries for animal feed, pet food, fish feed, and recycling applications.

GERMANY – Tietjen Verfahrenstechnik GmbH, a German manufacturer of industrial milling systems, has expanded its hammer mill portfolio with the introduction of the FD24 Pro, a model specially designed for the fine grinding of fat- and protein-rich recipes used in fish feed and pet food production.
The launch follows the success of the FD32 Pro hammer mill and marks another step in the company’s strategy to refine milling performance for demanding feed applications.
The FD24 Pro retains the proven hallmarks of Tietjen mills, robustness, smooth rotor operation, and ease of maintenance, while incorporating key innovations for greater efficiency and finer output control.
Among the most notable upgrades is an increase in rotor diameter by 100 millimetres, allowing higher beater speeds and finer grinding.
The distance between hammer tips and the screen has also been reduced, minimising screen clogging that often occurs in high-fat and high-protein formulations.
The mill’s grinding chamber, measuring 1,200 millimetres in length, is divided by a centre wall, making the 600 mm-wide screens easier to handle.
With a total screen area of 3.6 square meters (5,580 square inches), the FD24 Pro uses four screens per chamber segment. A new screen fastening system ensures tight seals to prevent oversize particles from entering the product.
According to the company, the design also allows the use of larger screen apertures without sacrificing product quality, thanks to additional impact zones that promote finer particle size distribution. This feature results in lower energy consumption and improved process efficiency.
“In operation, the FD24 Pro impresses with its ease of maintenance and efficiency,” the company said.
“Sliding doors on both sides of the machine facilitate access when changing screens and beaters. The beaters are changed using the proven beater frame system. The result: faster service, short downtimes and a more energy-efficient operation overall.”
From family workshop to global feed technology leader
Founded in 1959 in Hemdingen, northwest of Hamburg, Tietjen began as an agricultural enterprise before evolving into a process technology specialist serving the global feed and recycling industries.
Its first pneumatically controlled turbo mill was inspired by the founder’s insight that feed particle size significantly affects nutrient absorption in animals.
Today, the family-run company manufactures 48 types of hammer mills, each optimised for specific materials and performance goals.
Its mills, which operate at speeds exceeding 3,000 rpm, are used in over 50 countries for animal feed, pet food, fish feed, and recycling applications.
“Each of our mills is precisely adapted to the material being processed, its hardness, moisture content, and granularity,” said Thomas Runde, one of Tietjen’s CEOs.
“That’s what ensures efficiency, longevity, and consistency in performance.”
Tietjen’s hammer mills have become known for their durability, with some machines operating for more than 30 years.
The company’s in-house manufacturing, supported by advanced CNC machining and Siemens Sinumerik control systems, enables high precision and flexibility in production as well as rapid supply of spare parts.
