The acquisition strengthens Alltech’s foothold in northern Europe’s aquaculture sector while ensuring Finland’s domestic fish feed supply is safeguarded.

FINLAND – Alltech has taken a significant step forward in its aquaculture ambitions by securing majority ownership of Finland’s only fish feed facility, a move that underscores the company’s global commitment to sustainable and innovative cold-water fish nutrition.
The global animal nutrition and biotechnology firm acquired Finnforel’s stake in Alltech Fennoaqua Oy, making it the majority shareholder of the pioneering feed producer.
The acquisition strengthens Alltech’s foothold in northern Europe’s aquaculture sector while ensuring Finland’s domestic fish feed supply is safeguarded.
Located in Raisio, Alltech Fennoaqua stands out as the only fish feed production facility in Finland and a leader in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) nutrition.
The company produces tailored, sustainable feed solutions specifically for cold-water fish species, a segment that is increasingly vital in the global aquaculture industry.
“Aquaculture is one of the world’s fastest-growing sources of protein – and it is a focus area for us,” said Dr. Mark Lyons, president and CEO of Alltech.
“As the majority owner of Alltech Fennoaqua, we are deepening our commitment to delivering smarter, more sustainable solutions for aquaculture systems, backed by scientific innovation and global aquaculture expertise.”
Alltech initially entered the Finnish market in early 2023 through a joint acquisition with Finnforel of Raisio’s aquafeed business for EUR 7 million (US$7.5 million).
That deal preserved Finland’s only domestic source of fish feed, which was subsequently renamed Alltech Fennoaqua.
The company has since ramped up production to meet growing demand for RAS and cold-water aquaculture feed, both domestically and in neighbouring markets.
“This is an exciting milestone for Alltech Fennoaqua,” said CEO Tomi Kantola. “With Alltech’s expanded ownership and continued investment, we are better positioned than ever to serve aquaculture producers with innovative, sustainable feed solutions, all while supporting domestic food security and export growth.”
Leveraging shared strengths for worldwide impact
Alltech Fennoaqua will now benefit even more directly from the global resources of Alltech’s aquaculture division, Alltech Coppens, based in the Netherlands.
The facility will gain access to advanced R&D capabilities, enabling it to extend its reach into key cold-water markets, including Sweden, Poland, and the Baltic countries.
“This acquisition strengthens Alltech’s presence in aquaculture and reflects our belief in its vital role in feeding the world sustainably,” said Ronald Faber, CEO of Alltech Coppens and global aqua lead at Alltech.
“We’re now in an even stronger position to support responsible fish farming and deliver innovative, sustainable nutritional solutions for a growing global population. The future of aquaculture is full of opportunity.”
With more than four decades of expertise, Alltech Fennoaqua has long prioritised environmental stewardship, community engagement, and local economic development.
Its operations are grounded in circular economy principles, science-driven nutrition, and Alltech’s guiding mission: Working Together for a Planet of Plenty®.
As global demand for sustainable protein sources grows, Alltech’s majority stake in Finland’s only fish feed plant signals both a strategic expansion and a long-term investment in aquaculture innovation.
