UK – Meatly, a UK-based cultivated meat company, has become the first company in the world to supply cultivated meat for pet food.
In collaboration with plant-based dog food brand THE PACK, Meatly has launched a limited-release product, “Chick Bites,” now available at Pets at Home Brentford, London, as of 7 February 2025.
Chick Bites combines plant-based ingredients with Meatly Chicken, offering a nutritious, sustainable alternative to traditional dog treats.
According to Meatly, pets can enjoy the same great-tasting meat they crave while supporting a more ethical and environmentally friendly food system.
The company plans to raise additional funds to scale production and make Meatly Chicken more widely available within the next three to five years, with further collaborations planned alongside THE PACK and Pets at Home.
Pets at Home, one of Meatly’s largest investors, has made history by becoming the first retailer globally to sell pet food made from cultivated meat.
This aligns with its commitment to sustainability—producing and selling products that reduce carbon emissions, land use, and water consumption.
Meatly Chicken is produced using a single sample of cells taken from a chicken egg, enabling the continuous production of cultivated meat to feed pets indefinitely.
The product boasts the same taste and nutritional profile as conventional chicken breast, providing essential amino acids, critical fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins necessary for pet health.
Industry leaders celebrate innovation
Owen Ensor, Founding CEO of Meatly, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re incredibly excited to introduce cultivated meat to the pet world. This felt like a moonshot just two years ago—today, we take off. This marks a giant leap forward toward a significant market for meat that is healthy, sustainable, and kind to our planet and other animals. We’re proud to work on this momentous endeavour alongside fellow pioneers Pets at Home and THE PACK.”
Ensor added that despite securing only 1% of the total European cultivated meat investment, Meatly is the first company to sell cultivated meat in the UK and the EU.
Anja Madsen, Chief Operating Officer of Pets at Home, commented that this innovation has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of pet food and revolutionise the industry.
Damien Clarkson, CEO and Co-Founder of THE PACK, also emphasised the impact of this launch saying:
“Cultivated meat offers a delicious, low-carbon, and healthy protein source, with the potential to eliminate farmed animals from pet food. At THE PACK, our mission is to develop highly nutritious products that dogs love, and we’re delighted to partner with Meatly and Pets at Home on this world-first initiative.”
