KENYA – Kenya is accelerating the rollout of a digital livestock identification and traceability system designed to strengthen animal health management, disease surveillance and livestock productivity by creating individual health and movement records for cattle, goats and sheep.
Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe is championing the nationwide rollout of the Animal Identification and Traceability System (ANITRAC), which will give animals unique identities and create digital records that can follow them throughout their lifetime.
The system will capture information including an animal’s origin, ownership, health status, vaccination history and movements.
Animals can be identified through visual ear tags and microchips, with their records linked to a central digital platform accessible to authorised authorities, veterinarians, abattoirs, traders and other livestock value-chain players.
“Going forward, every Kenyan animal should have an identity and a traceable history. This will help us improve livestock management, strengthen disease surveillance, enhance food safety and open up better markets for our livestock producers,” Kagwe said.
Digital records to strengthen disease surveillance
A major benefit of ANITRAC will be the ability to build a clearer health history for individual animals and livestock herds.
During disease outbreaks, authorities could use movement records to establish where an infected animal originated and identify other animals that may have been exposed.
Vaccination records could also provide a clearer picture of disease-prevention coverage across livestock populations.
For veterinarians and livestock producers, better animal-level information could support more informed health and production decisions.
The system also forms part of Kenya’s wider push to improve livestock productivity.
Kagwe has urged farmers and pastoralists to combine traceability with improved genetics, artificial insemination, animal nutrition, commercial feedlots, livestock insurance and climate-smart production.
Better records could help producers manage these interventions more effectively by linking animal identity with health, breeding and production information.
Animal nutrition remains particularly important as Kenya seeks to raise livestock productivity.
Improved access to quality feed and better feeding practices can support animal growth, reproduction and overall health, while traceability can provide a digital framework for monitoring animals as they move through production systems.
Traceability could support livestock market access
The government is also linking ANITRAC to Kenya’s ambitions to access higher-value livestock and meat markets.
International buyers increasingly require information on animal origin, health status and movement history.
A national traceability system could therefore strengthen confidence in Kenyan livestock and animal products by providing verifiable records along the production chain.
The technology could also help address livestock theft and cattle rustling, which continue to affect farmers and pastoralists in parts of the country.
Animals with mismatched ownership or movement records could be flagged for verification before entering formal markets.
However, ANITRAC’s effectiveness will depend on widespread adoption and the accuracy of information entered into the system.
Reaching farmers and pastoralists in remote areas, ensuring animals are consistently registered and maintaining reliable health and movement records will be critical to creating a useful national database.
The government will also need to ensure livestock owners understand how the system works and that their data is appropriately protected.
If implemented effectively, ANITRAC could provide Kenya with a stronger digital foundation for livestock health management, linking animal identification with disease surveillance, vaccination, nutrition, breeding and productivity.
For the livestock sector, the system could ultimately shift traceability from a primarily market requirement to a practical tool for managing animal health and improving production from farm to market.
