Elanco completes US$120M expansion to boost pet medicine production

USA – Elanco Animal Health has completed a 25,000-square-foot expansion of its Elwood, Kansas manufacturing site, increasing monoclonal antibody (mAb) production capacity by more than four times to support growing demand for advanced animal health treatments.

The US$120 million expansion strengthens Elanco’s biologics manufacturing capabilities as the company scales its mAb portfolio for companion animals. 

A further US$30 million investment in additional warehousing is planned through 2028, bringing the total planned investment at the site to US$150 million.

The expanded facility includes new upstream and downstream processing equipment, a pilot plant for process development and clinical testing materials, a quality control laboratory and additional support spaces.

“When we announced the expansion two years ago, we recognised that executing the most exciting pipeline in Elanco’s history required a manufacturing footprint capable of matching our innovation ambition,” said Grace McArdle, Executive Vice President, Manufacturing and Quality.

“The expanded monoclonal antibody capacity ensures that as Elanco continues to pioneer breakthroughs in animal health, we are ready to meet pet owner and veterinarian demand with a safe and reliable supply.”

Elanco scales next-generation animal health pipeline

The investment comes as Elanco expands its portfolio of antibody-based treatments for pets.

The company recently began the phased launch of Befrena™ (tirnovetmab), an anti-IL-31 monoclonal antibody injection for treating canine allergic and atopic dermatitis. 

The product is manufactured at the Elwood facility alongside Trutect™, Elanco’s first mAb product, which received full approval in 2025 as a therapeutic solution for canine parvovirus.

Elanco President and CEO Jeff Simmons said demand for Befrena has exceeded expectations, making additional manufacturing capacity important to the product’s commercial rollout.

“With customer demand for Befrena two times above expectations, this expansion was key in ramping capacity to meet demand as we anticipate reaching unconstrained levels in early 2027,” Simmons said.

The company said the expansion will support a more consistent supply of mAb products as demand for advanced veterinary therapies grows.

Monoclonal antibodies are engineered proteins designed to target specific molecules involved in disease processes. 

Their use in veterinary medicine is expanding as animal health companies adapt advances in antibody-based therapies to treat specific conditions in pets.

Elanco Executive Vice President of Research, Development and Regulatory Affairs Dr Ellen de Brabander said the company sees further potential for antibody-based therapies in animal health.

“As we continue to draw insights from monoclonal advancements in human health, we believe that antibody-based therapies have untapped potential in animal health,” she said.

The expanded manufacturing site is expected to support both current products and Elanco’s broader development pipeline, providing additional capacity as the company advances new biologic treatments.

The investment also includes infrastructure designed to shorten development timelines. 

The new pilot plant will support process development and production of materials required for clinical testing, while the additional quality-control capacity will support manufacturing operations.

Elanco’s investment highlights the growing role of biologics and precision therapies alongside conventional pharmaceuticals. 

Increased manufacturing capacity will be critical as companies move more veterinary biologics from research and clinical development into commercial-scale production.
