Purabi Dairy launches premium cattle feed

INDIA – West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL), popularly known as Purabi Dairy, has launched Purabi Dana Supreme, a premium cattle feed formulated to improve the productivity of high-yielding dairy cattle and to promote scientific feeding practices among dairy farmers across Assam.

The new feed was unveiled during an event held in Khorisala, Barpeta district, attended by more than 250 dairy farmers, cooperative officials and representatives from the District Veterinary Office. 

The launch was accompanied by an animal health camp, where veterinary experts provided guidance on herd health, nutrition and scientific livestock management.

Developed under Purabi Pashu Pushti, Purabi Dairy’s livestock nutrition brand, Purabi Dana Supreme has been formulated in accordance with BIS Type-I specifications. 

The feed contains higher levels of crude protein and crude fat and is fortified with vitamins and minerals to support milk production, animal health, and reproductive performance in high-yielding dairy cattle.

“Purabi Dana Supreme has been developed to meet the evolving nutritional needs of high-yielding cattle and to support dairy farmers in adopting scientific feed management practices,” said Sameer Kumar Parida, Managing Director of WAMUL.

“Our focus has always been on strengthening the dairy cooperative movement by providing farmers with quality products, technical guidance and field-level support. We believe this new premium cattle feed will help farmers improve productivity, maintain better animal health and enhance their overall livelihood.”

The product will retail at INR1,075 (US$12.50) per 25 kg bag. However, dairy farmers affiliated with WAMUL will receive the feed at a subsidised price of INR 755 (US$8.80) per bag, thereby improving access to high-quality nutrition for cooperative members.

Scientific feeding drives dairy productivity

The launch reflects growing demand for specialised dairy feeds as farmers across Assam increasingly adopt improved dairy breeds such as Holstein Friesian, Jersey and Gir, which require balanced nutrition to achieve their production potential.

Nutrition has become a critical component of India’s dairy sector as producers seek to improve milk yields, animal health and feed efficiency while reducing production costs. 

Balanced compound feeds enriched with protein, minerals and vitamins help optimise rumen function, enhance nutrient utilisation and improve reproductive performance, particularly in genetically improved dairy herds.

Purabi Dairy has steadily expanded its feed manufacturing capacity to meet this demand. 

In 2022, with support from the Government of Assam under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), WAMUL recommissioned its Changsari cattle feed plant, which has the capacity to produce 50 metric tonnes of compound cattle feed per day, alongside a 25 metric tonne bypass protein plant and a 12 metric tonne mineral mixture facility.

Since operations resumed, WAMUL has supplied approximately 23,000 metric tonnes of cattle feed and 175 metric tonnes of mineral mixture to cooperative farmers at subsidised prices.

Managed by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and marketed through North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL), Purabi Dairy has grown into one of eastern India’s leading dairy cooperatives. 

As of March 2026, the organisation works with nearly 60,000 dairy farmers through 1,340 dairy cooperative societies across more than 2,500 villages, supporting milk production, farmer incomes and the continued modernisation of Assam’s dairy sector.
