Dsm-firmenich joins WOAH to lead the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

GLOBAL – dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has announced its participation in Animals & Us, a global digital series by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, that focuses on the relationship between animals, people and the environment.

The series examines how livestock systems are evolving to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food security and animal welfare. 

The episode featuring dsm-firmenich highlights how animal nutrition and farm management are being used to reduce reliance on antibiotics through preventive, science-based approaches.

The feature follows poultry producer Baromfi Coop, Master Good, showing how practical changes in nutrition, welfare and management can help maintain productivity while reducing antibiotic use. 

It highlights a shift toward prevention-led livestock production supported by collaboration between farmers, veterinarians and nutrition experts.

Fidelis Fru, SVP and Head of Global Business Development at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said that AMR is reshaping both human health and food production systems.

“Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest health challenges of our time, affecting not only how we treat infections but also how we produce food and protect livelihoods,” Fru said. 

“Reducing antibiotic use today will help preserve their effectiveness for the future.”

He added that preventive animal health strategies are now essential for sustainable livestock production, alongside responsible antibiotic use.

Prevention and nutrition at the centre of AMR reduction

The episode highlights how improved animal welfare, stronger biosecurity and precision nutrition are helping farmers reduce disease pressure in livestock systems. 

These measures lower the need for antibiotics while maintaining animal health and production efficiency.

Baromfi Coop, Master Good director Peter Barany said farmers are increasingly adopting practical solutions to improve animal health outcomes.

“Farmers have an important role to play, and many are actively looking for ways to reduce antibiotic use while maintaining high standards of animal health and welfare,” Barany said.

He added that partnerships with industry players such as dsm-firmenich provide technical support and knowledge to implement these changes effectively.

He said initiatives like Animals & Us make complex issues such as AMR, food security and animal welfare more accessible by showcasing practical solutions from across the livestock sector.

Dr Nataliya Roth, Global Lead AMR at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, said prevention remains the most effective tool for reducing antibiotic use.

She noted that advances in diagnostics, surveillance and nutrition allow farmers to detect risks earlier and manage animal health more effectively, reducing the need for treatments.

The WOAH-led series comes as global attention increases on the role of animal health systems in protecting food security, public health and sustainable agriculture.
