ADM invests US$55.5M to expand precision fermentation in Iowa

USA – Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) is investing US$55.5 million to convert an underutilised fermentation facility in Clinton, Iowa, into a precision fermentation operation, expanding its capacity to produce high-value proteins and enzymes for food, feed and industrial applications.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) Board approved US$2.23 million in tax credits through the state’s Business Incentives for Growth programme to support the project.

ADM expects the expansion to create 53 jobs.

The project will repurpose a 463,503-square-foot fermentation facility at ADM’s Clinton complex. 

It will include new equipment for separation, purification, drying, and packaging, along with upgrades to existing fermentation equipment, piping, and supporting systems.

The investment is expected to enable large-scale production of biobased proteins and enzymes, strengthening ADM’s capabilities in precision fermentation.

Precision fermentation expands feed ingredient opportunities

Precision fermentation uses microorganisms to produce targeted proteins, enzymes and other functional ingredients. 

The technology is attracting increasing investment as the food and feed industries seek new ways to produce specialised ingredients at commercial scale.

For the feed sector, precision fermentation could support the development of alternative proteins, enzymes and other functional ingredients that can be incorporated into animal nutrition products.

ADM’s investment also adds capacity to an existing agricultural processing footprint, allowing the company to use established fermentation infrastructure for higher-value biobased production.

The Clinton expansion forms part of a wider package of manufacturing and infrastructure incentives approved by the IEDA Board. 

The two manufacturing projects receiving support are expected to generate US$57.2 million in new capital investment and create 98 jobs.

ADM is a major global processor of agricultural commodities and producer of food, feed and industrial products. 

Its investment in precision fermentation reflects the company’s broader move into technologies that can produce higher-value ingredients alongside its traditional agricultural processing activities.

The project will also strengthen Iowa’s position in advanced manufacturing and biotechnology, with the state supporting additional investments in advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defence through separate Strategic Infrastructure Program projects.

For ADM, the Clinton investment provides additional fermentation capacity while positioning the company to develop and manufacture proteins and enzymes for a range of markets.

The expansion comes as the global feed industry continues to explore technologies that can improve the efficiency, functionality and sustainability of feed ingredients. 

ADM’s ability to produce precision-fermented ingredients at a larger scale could therefore create new opportunities for developing specialised feed solutions as the technology moves further toward commercial production.
