GLOBAL – dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has updated its Digital SalmoFan™ software with a new algorithm for measuring trout fillet colour, expanding the digital tool’s application across the salmon and trout value chains.
The portable Digital SalmoFan™ measures salmon and trout fillet colour using a numerical scoring system.
The update lets users select either salmon or trout, supporting consistent measurements across locations and reducing the impact of lighting conditions.
The technology builds on the company’s SalmoFan™ and SalmoFan™ Lineal products, which are widely used to measure salmon fillet colour.
The updated software is designed to help feed producers, farmers, processors and research institutions collect, store and share objective colour data.
Digital tools target aquaculture quality
Digital SalmoFan has already been adopted by companies and research institutions across the aquaculture industry, including Skretting Group, MOWI UK and UniNord University, for quality control and research and development activities.

Objective colour measurement can therefore provide producers and feed companies with data to support quality assessment and product development.
The software update brings the established SalmoFan colour measurement system into a digital format while extending its use to trout.
For feed manufacturers and farmers, the ability to generate consistent colour measurements could support nutritional research, feed formulation and assessment of how production practices affect fillet quality.
The development comes as aquaculture companies increasingly adopt digital tools to improve production monitoring and quality control.
By combining portable measurement hardware with digital data collection, dsm-firmenich aims to provide a standardised approach to assessing fish fillet colour across different stages of production and processing.
