This development is part of CP Foods’ broader Agri-Tech strategy to fast-track the adoption of sustainable energy sources across its Feed, Farm, and Food business lines.
THAILAND – Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) has made history by unveiling Thailand’s first fully renewable energy-powered layer chicken farm in Chanthaburi province, marking a major milestone in the company’s journey toward achieving Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The announcement was made as CP Foods confirmed the transformation of its Chanthaburi layer chicken complex into a model RE100 farm, a site now operating entirely on renewable energy.
This development is part of CP Foods’ broader Agri-Tech strategy to fast-track the adoption of sustainable energy sources across its Feed, Farm, and Food business lines.
Previously, the Chanthaburi farm relied on an energy mix in which approximately 80% of power was sourced from biogas produced using chicken manure.
The facility now operates entirely on renewable energy, thanks to the integration of solar power and enhanced biogas systems.
The achievement has earned CP Foods its first RE100 Farm certification from LRQA (Thailand), establishing the farm as a flagship model of green agriculture.
“This transformation reflects our ‘Waste to Value’ approach by converting agricultural waste into clean energy and eliminating external pollution,” the company stated.
According to Somkid Wannalukkhee, Head of the Egg Business at CP Foods, the farm’s vertically integrated design, incorporating layer barns, automated egg grading, and processing facilities on-site, has further boosted operational efficiency and food safety.
“The farm’s integrated production system enhances operational efficiency, reduces logistics costs, and ensures high food safety standards,” he said.
“Biogas systems have been implemented across all CP Foods farms, with efforts underway to adopt 100% renewable energy usage across all operations.”
Supporting this progress is the farm’s advanced energy infrastructure. In 2023, CP Foods installed an additional 360 kWp rooftop solar system at the site through a collaboration with Altervim.
The project also introduced a smart Energy Management System (EMS), which intelligently allocates power between solar and biogas sources to maximise energy efficiency and reduce reliance on external supply.
Peerapong Krinchai, Head of Corporate Engineering at CP Foods, explained, “This technology enables efficient energy sourcing between biogas and solar power, further reducing the farm’s reliance on external energy supplies and strengthening energy self-sufficiency.”
The environmental impact is already measurable. The Chanthaburi farm now offsets more than 16,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent of planting over 1.7 million trees.
With this pioneering success, CP Foods is preparing to scale the RE100 farm model nationwide, aligning with its long-term sustainability roadmap and firm commitment to a Net-Zero 2050 future.
“Looking ahead, CP Foods plans to replicate the RE100 farm model across its operations nationwide as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and its Net-Zero 2050 objective,” the company confirmed.
