World Aquaculture Safari 2025 secures GIZ as Gold Sponsor

As part of its sponsorship, GIZ will host two strategic sessions at AFRAQ2025 on “Alternative Feeds for Aquaculture,” and “Access to Finance for Small-Scale Aquaculture Producers.”

UGANDA – The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ GmbH) has been officially named the Gold Sponsor of the World Aquaculture Safari 2025 (WA25), to be held in Uganda, further solidifying its commitment to advancing sustainable aquaculture across Africa.

The announcement was made ahead of the much-anticipated Aquaculture Africa 2025 Conference (AFRAQ2025), taking place from June 24-27, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, Uganda.

The international event, which will bring together experts, innovators, and stakeholders from across the globe, marks GIZ’s fourth partnership with WAS in Africa.

We are delighted to be part of the World Aquaculture Safari and AFRAQ2025 with partners from India, Nigeria, Madagascar, Malawi, Zambia and Uganda,” said Friederike Sorg, Head of Global Programme for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture at GIZ.

We look forward to inspiring conversations and networking opportunities on how to take the African aquaculture sector to the next level.

Through its Global Programmes on “Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture” and “Sustainable Aquatic Foods”, implemented on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ promotes responsible aquaculture practices, improved fishery management, and greater resilience for small-scale producers.

These initiatives aim to enhance food security, diversify incomes, and build climate resilience in African communities.

As part of its sponsorship, GIZ will host two strategic sessions at AFRAQ2025. The first, “Alternative Feeds for Aquaculture,” will explore the use of agricultural by-products and new protein sources as affordable alternatives to fish meal.

These alternatives are especially critical for small-scale producers, for whom the cost of formulated feeds remains a significant barrier.

The second session, “Access to Finance for Small-Scale Aquaculture Producers,” will address the financial challenges faced by local farmers.

It will highlight how improved access to financial services and business development training can empower producers to scale operations, boost production, and contribute more significantly to food and nutrition security across Africa.

GIZ invests in capacity building in aquaculture

GIZ’s efforts go beyond on-the-ground support. The organisation works closely with producer groups, service providers, training institutions, and research centres to strengthen institutional capacities.

It also partners with policymakers to create enabling environments for sustainable aquaculture development.

The World Aquaculture Safari 2025 is set to be a landmark event in the continent’s aquaculture calendar.

Building on the momentum of previous AFRAQ editions in Egypt (2022), Zambia (2023), and Tunisia (2024), this year’s conference will feature an expansive trade show with nearly 150 exhibition booths.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore innovations, forge partnerships, and engage in critical discussions on the future of aquaculture.

TRUEFISH, an EU-funded project managed by the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO), is the lead sponsor of WA25.

Other sponsors include AQUA GROUP, the World Bank, the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH), Essential Drug Limited, Aller Aqua, and AUDA-NEPAD.
