Wyoming extends livestock transport relief amid wildfires, anthrax outbreak

USA – In response to ongoing wildfires, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon has extended an executive order to ease the transportation of livestock feed and animals across the state. 

The extension, originally enacted in late August, exempts motor carrier drivers from time restrictions on transporting livestock and feed. This allows ranchers to move their animals to safety more efficiently and bring necessary supplies.

Governor Gordon emphasised the importance of the measure in supporting agricultural producers affected by the wildfires. 

“The extension of this EO allows our ranchers to continue to move their livestock to safety quickly and expedites bringing in necessary feed,” said Gordon. “Wyoming’s commitment to supporting agricultural producers remains unwavering.”

Wildfires continue to pose a threat across Wyoming, with multiple fire starts occurring weekly due to hot, dry, and windy conditions.

 “We must be conscientious of the conditions and the impact even a small act, like sighting your rifle on dry grassland, can have,” warned Gordon as he urged residents to follow fire bans and local safety guidelines to help minimise risks.

Anthrax outbreak raises concern 

In a separate but equally concerning issue, Wyoming is facing an anthrax outbreak in its cattle population. 

The Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL) confirmed the presence of the disease in multiple beef herds on August 31, marking the state’s first case of anthrax in cattle since the 1970s. The outbreak has already claimed the lives of 50 to 60 cattle.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has also reported the first documented case of anthrax in wildlife since 1956 after identifying the disease in a dead moose in Carbon County. 

Anthrax, caused by Bacillus anthracis, is a serious zoonotic disease affecting animals and humans. State officials closely monitor the situation to prevent further outbreaks and minimise human exposure.

Veterinarian Dr. Hallie Hasel highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing the coordinated efforts between state agencies and private veterinarians to protect animal and human health. 

The public is being warned not to approach or touch dead animals in the wild, and hunters are advised against harvesting animals that appear unwell.

With Wyoming battling both wildfires and an anthrax outbreak, the state’s agricultural sector faces significant challenges. However, through swift and decisive action, officials are working to mitigate the damage and safeguard the health of both livestock and residents.
