FRANCE – CCPA Group and Lallemand Animal Nutrition have partnered with the Research Institute for Environmental and Occupational Health (IRSET) to study how bioactive compounds influence animal nutrition, immunity and metabolism.
The SCAN partnership brings together the two animal nutrition companies and IRSET’s “Membrane and Metabolic Stress” technical platform, hosted at the research institute within the University of Rennes, INSERM and EHESP.
The collaboration will use advanced in vitro cellular models developed and validated by IRSET scientists to assess the effects of nutritional compounds on livestock health and performance.
The models are designed to provide a rapid and reproducible way to investigate interactions between nutrition, immunity and metabolism.
“The SCAN partnership illustrates the successful transfer of our cellular models to industry while maintaining a high level of scientific and ethical standards, particularly regarding the principles of the 3Rs,” said Michel Samson, director of IRSET.
The partnership will support the R&D programmes of CCPA and Lallemand independently while allowing the companies to pool resources for developing experimental models.
Exploring bioactive compounds
The research will use in vitro cell models targeting different organs and tissues in specific animal species.
This will allow the partners to screen and compare the effects of bioactive compounds and better understand their potential influence on animal performance.
CCPA said the partnership complements its nutrition research infrastructure, including its monogastric nutrition research stations in France and Mexico and its international network of reference farms.
The company will use the platform to investigate the biological activity of compounds, particularly plant-based bioactive substances found in raw materials.
The partnership could also support the development of nutritional solutions using currently underutilised bioactive compounds from plant-based industry co-products.
“Through the SCAN partnership, we are reaching a key milestone in our innovation strategy,” said Arnaud Wieczorek, research and innovation director at CCPA Group.
“It enables us to characterize the modes of action of nutritional compounds at a very early stage and to understand the interactions between nutrition, metabolism and immunity on a solid scientific basis.”
For Lallemand Animal Nutrition, the partnership complements its six Centers of Excellence focused on microbial solutions.
The SCAN platform will provide an additional tool for studying host responses and screening microbial compounds during the early stages of product development.

The partners said the collaboration will help strengthen the scientific evidence behind future nutritional solutions while supporting livestock health, performance and sustainability. It is supported by the Carnot Institute AgriFood Transition.
