USA – The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has released its annual report, “Our Industry, Our Promise,” which illuminates the operational challenges faced by U.S. feed and pet food manufacturers and outlines the actions AFIA is taking to address these issues.
The report, covering the fiscal year from May 2023 to April 2024, provides a comprehensive analysis of the animal feed industry’s contributions to the U.S. and global economies amidst an increasingly uncertain business climate.
Key sections of the report focus on various critical areas, including:
Business Climate: The report delves into the domestic supply chain challenges affecting U.S. feed manufacturers.
It also addresses the discrepancies between state and federal regulations that have complicated operations and the industry’s advocacy for modernised pet food labels to ensure consistency and clarity.
Feed Safety: AFIA highlights its efforts to prepare manufacturing facilities for routine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspections.
The report also discusses safeguarding measures against potential animal disease outbreaks, protecting worker health, and advocating for the continued safe use of formaldehyde in swine and poultry feed.
Global Policy: On the international front, AFIA has been actively advocating for sound policies at both national and global levels.
The report outlines efforts to hold U.S. trading partners accountable and open new markets for U.S. animal feed exports, particularly in key countries with significant growth opportunities.
Sustainability: The report emphasises the industry’s progress in sustainability, including AFIA’s role in international dialogues and its efforts to position feed as a solution to global food security and climate challenges.
It also highlights the resources provided to members to help them meet their sustainability commitments.
Carlos González, PhD, 2023-24 AFIA board chair and vice president of global regulatory affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc., expressed gratitude for the dedication of AFIA members and staff, noting that their continuous efforts to improve and innovate are paving the way for a brighter future for the industry.
In addition to these focal points, the report updates AFIA’s professional networking and educational offerings, recognises industry award winners, and highlights the association’s contributions to local communities and engagement on social media platforms.
