Cargill invests US$9.5M to expand Norway aquafeed plant

NORWAY – Cargill is investing NOK90 million (US$9.5 million) to expand its aquafeed manufacturing facility at Halsa in northern Norway, strengthening production capacity and logistics as demand for salmon feed continues to grow.

The investment will fund the construction of a 1,100-square-metre finished goods warehouse alongside new offices, changing rooms and employee facilities at the Halsa plant in Meløy municipality. 

The project is expected to improve storage capacity and operational efficiency while enhancing customer service across central Norway.

Construction has been awarded to Norwegian contractor Halsa Bygg following a competitive tender process. 

The warehouse is scheduled for completion in summer 2027, while the new employee facilities are expected to be operational during the winter of 2027-28.

The Halsa facility produces aquafeed under Cargill’s EWOS brand and is expected to manufacture more than 200,000 metric tonnes of feed next year, supporting Norway’s salmon farming industry.

“The investment provides better facilities for our employees and gives us greater flexibility to serve customers,” said Tarjei Eide, Managing Director of Cargill’s fish feed operations in Norway, Scotland and Canada.

Expanding aquafeed capacity

The expansion reflects continued investment in aquaculture feed infrastructure as producers seek to meet rising global demand for farmed seafood while improving supply chain efficiency.

Norway remains the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon, with feed manufacturers investing in larger production facilities, automated storage systems and logistics improvements to support growing production volumes. 

Efficient feed supply has become increasingly important as salmon farmers focus on improving feed conversion, fish health and sustainability.

For feed manufacturers, additional warehouse capacity reduces storage bottlenecks, improves inventory management and enables more reliable deliveries during periods of peak demand.

The Halsa investment complements Cargill’s broader aquafeed manufacturing network in Norway, where the company also operates production facilities at Bergneset and Florø.

The latest project also underscores continued confidence in the long-term growth of the aquaculture sector despite ongoing challenges linked to raw material costs, sustainability requirements and biological risks. 

As global seafood consumption continues to rise, investments in feed manufacturing capacity are expected to play a critical role in supporting future aquaculture production while ensuring producers have access to consistent, high-quality feed supplies.
