The project is expected to improve supply security, operational efficiency, and the sustainability of its DL-methionine production.

GERMANY – Evonik has completed the backward integration of its world-scale MetAMINO® (DL-methionine) production facility in Mobile, Alabama, strengthening the reliability of its global feed additive supply network while improving sustainability and operational efficiency.
The milestone establishes on-site production of the key intermediate methyl mercaptan at all three of Evonik’s major methionine manufacturing hubs in Mobile (United States), Antwerp (Belgium) and Singapore, creating a fully integrated global production network.
According to the company, the investment strengthens supply security for livestock producers and feed manufacturers by reducing dependence on external intermediate supplies and limiting exposure to market volatility.
“We are proud to have completed the backward integration of our Mobile hub, a complex and demanding project that marks an important step forward for our methionine asset strategy,” said Gaetano Blanda, Head of the Animal Nutrition business line at Evonik.
“It strengthens our global production network, reduces exposure to market volatility, and enhances our operational position, enabling us to grow together with our customers in a sustainable way.”
The upgraded production configuration also delivers environmental benefits.
Evonik said manufacturing methyl mercaptan on-site reduces the carbon footprint of DL-methionine production by approximately 7% and eliminates the need to transport hazardous intermediates between facilities, improving safety and reducing logistical risks.
For customers across the Americas, the Mobile expansion is expected to improve supply reliability amid ongoing disruptions affecting global chemical and feed ingredient supply chains.
“For our MetAMINO® customers in the Americas, a reliable regional supply is essential,” said Paulo Teixeira, Regional Vice President Americas at Evonik Animal Nutrition.
“By producing key intermediates on-site in Mobile, we are less exposed to global supply disruptions and can provide the stability our customers, and ultimately the end consumers of food products, need in an increasingly volatile environment.”
Methionine demand continues to grow
Methionine is one of the most important amino acids used in animal nutrition, particularly in poultry, swine and aquaculture feeds, where it supports growth, feed efficiency and protein utilisation.
As livestock producers seek to improve productivity while reducing feed costs and environmental impacts, demand for high-quality amino acid supplementation continues to increase.
Evonik has continued investing in its Animal Nutrition business as demand grows for precision feeding solutions that improve nutrient utilisation and reduce nitrogen emissions.
The company recently expanded its portfolio beyond feed additives by launching GutCare® PY1, a probiotic solution for poultry, and continues to develop digital and nutritional technologies that support more sustainable livestock production.
The completion of the Mobile project further reinforces Evonik’s position among the world’s leading methionine producers, with an integrated manufacturing network spanning North America, Europe and Asia.
Through its MetAMINO® portfolio and broader animal nutrition solutions, the company aims to help feed manufacturers and livestock producers improve production efficiency while supporting the sustainable production of safe, affordable animal protein for a growing global population.
