Innovasea adds rainbow trout to biomass monitoring platform

USA – Innovasea has added a new rainbow trout biomass algorithm to its BiomassPro solution, expanding the aquaculture technology platform to eight fish species.

The new algorithm is designed to help trout producers estimate biomass and monitor growth, providing data that can support feeding, production planning, and other farm management decisions.

“Expanding BiomassPro to include rainbow trout allows us to bring proven biomass estimation capabilities to an important segment of the global aquaculture industry,” said Marc Turano, Innovasea’s general manager for Aquaculture Operations.

BiomassPro combines an AI-powered camera with a digital dashboard and can operate with or without fixed infrastructure. 

The system can be deployed and retrieved by a single employee, while onboard data processing allows it to be moved between pens.

The technology collects biomass data that is compiled with current and historical information in Innovasea’s Realfish Pro platform. 

The resulting reports allow farm managers to track growth performance over time, identify unexpected changes, and support production decisions with data.

“By expanding BiomassPro’s species coverage, we’re making it simpler for more farms to access timely, actionable data that supports confident decision-making throughout the production cycle,” said Tim Stone, Innovasea vice president of Aquaculture Technology.

Biomass monitoring is an important part of aquaculture management because accurate estimates of fish weight and growth can help producers adjust feeding strategies, assess production performance, and plan harvesting.

With the addition of rainbow trout, BiomassPro now supports Atlantic salmon, cobia, European sea bass, gilthead seabream, king salmon, rainbow trout, red snapper, and yellowtail.

Innovasea said the expanded species coverage gives producers a single biomass monitoring platform that can be deployed across different aquaculture operations.
