Blue Buffalo launches AI tool to compare dog food

USA – Blue Buffalo has launched an AI-powered tool that allows dog owners to compare their current dog food with matching recipes from the company’s Life Protection Formula range using a photograph of the product.

The tool allows users to photograph or upload an image of a dog food bag, either their current product or one they are considering buying.

It then identifies the product and matches it with the closest Life Protection Formula recipe, displaying comparisons of ingredients and product benefits.

The technology uses Google’s multimodal Gemini model to recognise a dog food bag from a single photograph and identify the closest matching Blue Buffalo recipe.

The tool can compare 60 products from brands including Purina, Purina Pro Plan, Hill’s, Iams, Royal Canin, Rachael Ray Nutrish and Pedigree.

Blue Buffalo’s launch comes as consumers increasingly use artificial intelligence to support purchasing decisions.

According to the National Retail Federation, 41% of consumers use AI tools to help guide their purchases.

The comparison tool is also linked to a promotional offer. Consumers who purchase a qualifying 5-pound bag of Life Protection Formula after using the tool can receive a rebate of up to US$25 by uploading their receipt.

The tool gives consumers a way to compare dog-food products based on ingredients and stated benefits while introducing Blue Buffalo’s Life Protection Formula range as an alternative.
