USA – Blue Buffalo has introduced BLUE Tastefuls™ Irresistible Gravy Experience, a category-first 2‑in‑1 recipe that transforms dry cat food into a savoury gravy, offering cat parents flexibility to serve meals dry or as a rich, hydrated option.
The food can be served dry for crunch with gravy baked in or hydrated with water to create a wet meal.
Formulated with real meat, natural ingredients, and essential nutrients, the recipes are available in Chicken & Brown Rice and Salmon & Brown Rice and also help increase moisture intake when prepared wet.
“Pet parents always want their cats to be satisfied, but different cats have different food preferences,” said Ben Myers, Business Unit Director, Blue Buffalo Treating & Cat Feeding.
“We created a solution that delights cats with gravy while giving owners more options at mealtime.”
Hybrid formats reflect broader trends in pet nutrition
Blue Buffalo’s launch is distinctive for allowing a single product to be served dry or wet.
While no other major cat food products replicate this exact format, other companies have introduced innovations that highlight broader market trends toward texture, hydration, and convenience.
Nestlé Purina PetCare expanded its Gourmet Revelations premium wet cat food in early 2025 with pyramid-shaped formats that elevate texture and eating experience, particularly in Europe and the U.S.
Wellness Pet Company introduced more than 20 wet cat food products in August 2025, offering diverse proteins such as lamb, shrimp, and egg, as well as hydration-focused recipes for picky eaters.
Legacy brands like Post Consumer Brands refreshed portfolios with new dry and wet offerings across 9Lives, Kibbles ‘n Bits, and Nature’s Recipe, highlighting flavour and texture variety alongside balanced nutrition.
Functional and freeze-dried formats have also expanded.
At Global Pet Expo 2025, Primal launched Kibble in the Raw for Cats, combining the convenience of kibble with the nutrition of freeze-dried raw.
Open Farm unveiled Epic Blend Baked Kibble, a layered formula with air-dried bites and organ meats, while Vital Essentials added softer “Soft Nibs” to its Crunchy Nibs line for sensitive teeth.
These formats, though not dual-purpose like Blue Buffalo, show the market’s focus on combining texture, nutrition, and convenience.
Alternative proteins and functional ingredients are another area of innovation.
In early 2025, Marsapet/MicroBell introduced a dry dog food using FeedKind® Pet protein, a cultured ingredient derived from fermentation, reflecting the growing interest in sustainability and novel nutrition.
