Biovet expands technical engagement with feed producers in West Africa

The mission focused on addressing feed safety, mycotoxin control and intestinal health challenges in livestock production.

WEST AFRICA – Biovet S.A. Laboratorios has strengthened its engagement with livestock producers and feed manufacturers in West Africa following a trade mission to Nigeria and Ghana, focusing on key production challenges, including feed safety, raw material quality, and intestinal health in livestock systems.

The visit focused on addressing key production challenges related to feed safety, raw material quality and intestinal health in livestock production systems.

During the mission, Biovet’s technical team held a series of meetings with clients and industry partners in major commercial hubs.

In Nigeria, engagements took place in Lagos, Ibadan, and Ikeja, where the team met with feed producers at both corporate offices and production facilities.

In Ghana, discussions were conducted in Tema and Accra, two of the country’s key industrial and logistics centres.

The company said the meetings allowed its specialists to better understand the operational realities of local producers and identify areas where technical support and feed additive solutions could improve productivity and feed safety.

By visiting production plants directly, the team assessed manufacturing conditions and discussed practical solutions tailored to each operation.

According to the company, several feed additive products attracted strong interest from regional partners.

These included Alquerfeed Toxapure and Alquerfeed Antitox for controlling mycotoxins in feed ingredients, and Alquermold Natural Plus for feed preservation.

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by moulds that can contaminate grains and oilseeds, potentially reducing animal performance and increasing health risks in livestock.

Feed producers also showed interest in Alquernat Yucca, which is used to improve environmental conditions in animal housing by reducing ammonia emissions.

Additional attention was given to Alquernat Livol, Alquernat Zycox and Alquernat Nebsui, products designed to support liver function, strengthen intestinal immunity and maintain optimal gut health.

Biovet said the mission reflects its strategy of combining technical support with specialised feed additive solutions. The company emphasised that close collaboration with regional partners remains central to its approach as it expands its presence in African livestock markets.

Feed safety challenges in Nigeria and Ghana

Feed producers in Nigeria and Ghana face several structural challenges that affect feed safety and animal productivity.

One of the most significant issues is the high risk of mycotoxin contamination in feed ingredients such as maize, soybeans and groundnuts.

Warm temperatures and high humidity create favourable conditions for mould growth during crop production, storage and transportation, increasing the likelihood of toxin formation.

Mycotoxins can negatively affect livestock health by damaging the liver, weakening immune systems and reducing growth performance.

For poultry and pig producers in particular, even low levels of contamination can lead to economic losses due to reduced feed efficiency and higher mortality.

To address these risks, feed manufacturers in both countries are increasingly adopting improved storage practices, better grain-handling systems, and mycotoxin-binding feed additives.

Industry stakeholders are also investing in laboratory testing and quality control programs to monitor contamination levels in raw materials before feed formulation.

In addition, technical training and collaboration with international feed additive suppliers have become more common as producers seek to strengthen feed safety management.

These efforts aim to improve overall feed quality, support animal health and enhance productivity in rapidly expanding livestock sectors across West Africa.
