BinSentry sues BarnTools over feed bin monitoring patent infringement

CANADA – BinSentry Inc., a Canadian developer of artificial intelligence-powered feed inventory management technology, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against U.S.-based BarnTools LLC, alleging that the company’s BinTalk feed bin monitoring products unlawfully use patented technology developed by BinSentry.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa and centres on U.S. Patent No. 12,359,958, titled Bin Level Monitoring System, which was granted to BinSentry on July 15, 2025.

According to the complaint, BarnTools infringes the patent through its BinTalk and BinTalk Pro products, which are designed to monitor feed levels in livestock feed bins.

BinSentry’s patented technology covers an integrated feed bin monitoring system comprising a sensor with a mounting bracket, transmitter, circuit board, enclosure and communication system that collects, processes and transmits feed inventory data in real time.

The company said its technology enables livestock producers and feed manufacturers to automate feed inventory monitoring, replacing manual inspection methods and improving supply chain efficiency.

BinSentry Chief Executive Officer Ben Allen said protecting the company’s intellectual property is essential to safeguarding its innovation.

“BinSentry built a successful business model on a foundation of cutting-edge science and scalable proprietary technology that delivers clear, quantifiable value to our customers,” Allen said.

“As a technology company, innovation is one of our core values and we must protect our intellectual property.”

The complaint further alleges that BarnTools was aware of BinSentry’s pending patent application because its own patent filings referenced BinSentry’s published patent materials related to the technology.

Despite that knowledge, BinSentry claims BarnTools continued developing and marketing products that allegedly infringe the company’s patent rights.

Allen said the legal action is intended to protect the company’s technology and support fair competition within the agricultural technology sector.

“Our technology platform is helping major protein producers and feed millers transition from outdated, inefficient manual systems to automated, real-time feed inventory management that is more efficient, more profitable, safer and more sustainable,” he said.

“This lawsuit is about protecting BinSentry’s innovation, standing up for our customers, employees and investors, and supporting a fair and competitive marketplace.”

BinSentry develops artificial intelligence-based inventory management solutions for the animal feed supply chain, combining optical sensors with cloud-based software to provide real-time visibility of feed inventories and improve forecasting accuracy.

The company said its technology helps livestock producers and feed manufacturers reduce supply disruptions, lower operating costs, and improve supply chain efficiency.

According to BinSentry, its systems currently monitor more than 65,000 feed storage assets daily across North and South America.

The company has not disclosed the damages being sought in the lawsuit, and BarnTools had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
