FEFAC, Sindirações Sign EU-Brazil Feed MoU

BRAZIL – The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) and the Brazilian Feed Industry Association (Sindirações) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation between the European and Brazilian feed sectors, with a focus on feed safety, animal health, biosecurity, regulatory alignment and sustainable feed production.

The agreement was signed during the 19th International Feed Regulators Meeting (IFRM), jointly organised by the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Under the MoU, the two organisations will exchange expertise and monitor regulatory developments affecting the feed industry, including feed legislation, ingredient approvals, labelling requirements and maximum residue levels. 

They will also coordinate their engagement in international standard-setting bodies such as Codex Alimentarius, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to promote science-based global feed standards.

“We welcome this reinforced partnership between FEFAC and Sindirações, which strengthens cooperation between two important compound feed-producing regions,” said FEFAC President Nicolas Coudry-Mesny.

“Brazil represents a region of great significance in global feed production and trade with feed ingredients. It is fundamental to maintain market access to ensure EU feed security and a competitive and sustainable livestock production in Europe.”

The agreement is also expected to support implementation of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement, which entered provisional application on May 1, 2026. 

Through the partnership, both organisations aim to facilitate dialogue on trade in feed ingredients, including soy products, feed grains, biofuel co-products and essential feed additives.

“Preserving market access is essential to safeguarding the EU’s feed supply while supporting competitive and sustainable livestock production across Europe,” said Sindirações President Roberto Ignacio Betancourt.

“Through close cooperation, Europe and Brazil can foster the continued growth and resilience of their feed industries.”

EU-Mercosur trade pact expected to reshape feed ingredient flows

The MoU comes at a time when trade relations between Europe and South America are becoming increasingly important for global feed supply chains. 

Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of soybeans and one of the leading suppliers of soybean meal, maize and other feed ingredients used extensively by Europe’s livestock sector.

European feed manufacturers remain heavily dependent on imported protein meals, particularly soy products, to meet the nutritional requirements of poultry, swine and dairy production. 

Strengthening cooperation with Brazil is therefore viewed as a strategic move to improve supply security while supporting more resilient and sustainable livestock production.

The agreement also reflects growing collaboration between feed industry organisations as regulators tighten requirements around feed safety, traceability, sustainability and environmental performance. 

Both regions are placing greater emphasis on harmonising standards and encouraging science-based regulation to facilitate international trade without compromising food and feed safety.

For Brazil, closer engagement with European industry stakeholders provides an opportunity to strengthen market access and demonstrate compliance with evolving sustainability and regulatory expectations. 

For Europe, the partnership offers greater certainty over access to critical feed ingredients at a time of increasing volatility in global agricultural markets.

The MoU reinforces the role of industry collaboration in supporting resilient feed supply chains while advancing international standards that underpin safe, efficient and sustainable animal production.
