Nutreco cuts operational emissions 47% as sustainability targets reshape feed and aquaculture sectors

NETHERLANDS – Nutreco has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 47% from 2018 levels and eliminated coal and oil use across its operations, as the animal nutrition and aquaculture giant intensifies efforts to align feed production with global climate and sustainability targets.

The company disclosed the figures in its 2025 Impact Report, which combines sustainability performance data from its aquaculture feed business, Skretting and animal nutrition division, Trouw Nutrition.

The report marks the final year of Nutreco’s Sustainability RoadMap 2025 strategy and outlines progress across emissions reduction, circularity, sourcing, governance and animal welfare.

“This Impact Report 2025 marks a clear milestone. It shows where we’ve made progress and where focus and commitment are still needed as we continue to help build a more resilient and sustainable food system,” said Bastiaan van Tilburg.

The reduction in operational emissions comes as feed and livestock companies face growing pressure to decarbonise supply chains, particularly in energy-intensive manufacturing operations.

Feed production contributes significantly to agricultural emissions globally, with energy use, ingredient sourcing and transport among the sector’s largest environmental challenges.

Nutreco said it has also advanced circularity efforts, with 90% of its packaging now classified as recyclable, reusable or compostable.

In aquaculture sourcing, the company reported that 88% of its marine ingredients now come through Fishery Improvement Projects, reflecting increasing industry efforts to improve traceability and sustainability in fishmeal and fish oil supply chains.

The report also highlighted social and governance indicators, including workplace safety, ethics and diversity targets.

Women represented 29% of senior management positions in 2025, according to the company.

Feed and aquaculture industries face rising sustainability demands

Nutreco said Skretting and Trouw Nutrition are increasingly focused on helping producers balance sustainability demands with profitability as regulations tighten and food companies strengthen climate commitments.

The businesses provide nutritional technologies, advisory services, and digital tools to improve feed efficiency, animal health, and environmental performance across livestock and aquaculture systems.

The company acknowledged that some sustainability targets progressed more slowly than expected under the 2025 roadmap, particularly where adoption depended on customer readiness, market economics and supply chain complexity.

Those challenges have shaped Nutreco’s new RoadMap 2030 strategy, which retains three main pillars: climate and environment, animal welfare, and livelihoods and good citizenship.

The updated roadmap places greater emphasis on helping farmers and feed producers implement practical sustainability measures while maintaining productivity.

Nutreco said the report was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative standards and reflects preparations for future requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive in Europe.
