ADM launches PRIOME® joint health postbiotic as microbiome science reshapes pet nutrition

The global pet food market is projected to exceed $150bn in the coming years, with functional and premium products accounting for a growing share.

U.S.A – ADM, a global leader in innovative solutions from nature, has introduced a new postbiotic ingredient targeting pet joint health, expanding its PRIOME® portfolio as demand grows for functional, science-backed pet nutrition solutions.

The PRIOME® Joint Health is a heat-treated strain of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus designed for use across multiple pet food and supplement formats.

The ingredient is positioned to support joint function, mobility and overall wellness in companion animals, particularly dogs.

The product is supported by preliminary in vitro and model-organism research, and findings suggest potential benefits across cartilage function, collagen production, muscle maintenance and weight management.

ADM said the ingredient also supports gut barrier function, reflecting growing scientific focus on the “gut-joint axis”.

“Joint health is among pet parents’ top concerns for their pet’s quality of life,” said Mark Lotsch, Global President, Health & Wellness at ADM.

“Our postbiotic ingredient is an innovative science-backed solution that can support wellness in a variety of pet-friendly applications.”

Research increasingly links gut microbiome balance to systemic conditions, including joint health.

Studies cited by ADM show that dogs with arthritis exhibit reduced microbial diversity compared to healthy animals, supporting the idea that gut health influences inflammation and mobility outcomes.

Postbiotics, unlike probiotics, are non-living microorganisms. They are more stable during processing and storage.

This makes them easier to incorporate into commercial pet food formats, such as kibble, treats, and wet food, without compromising efficacy.

ADM said PRIOME® Joint Health can be used in powders, soft chews, baked treats, extruded products, liquids and complete diets.

The ingredient does not affect taste or smell, which are important factors in pet food formulation and palatability.

“We combine deep formulation expertise with a robust portfolio of microbiome solutions to help brands bring consumer-driven pet products to market,” said James Kyffin, Global Director, Pet and Animal Wellbeing at ADM.

Microbiome innovation is reshaping the pet sector.

Functional ingredients such as prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics are rapidly transforming the global pet food industry.

The global pet food market is projected to exceed US$150 billion in the coming years, with functional and premium products accounting for a growing share.

Pet owners are increasingly treating animals as family members. This is pushing demand for premium, health-focused products.

Joint health, gut health and healthy ageing are among the fastest-growing segments.

Industry data indicates that more than 60% of dog owners globally are concerned about mobility and joint issues, particularly in ageing pets.

At the same time, digestive health claims remain one of the top purchasing drivers in premium pet food.

The convergence of these concerns is accelerating investment in microbiome science.

Companies are now developing targeted solutions that go beyond basic nutrition.

These include ingredients designed to influence immunity, cognition and metabolic health through the gut microbiome.

ADM is positioning itself to meet evolving consumer expectations while enabling feed manufacturers to differentiate in a competitive market.
