Veramaris stood out to the jury for its innovative approach to sustainable feed production.

NETHERLANDS – Veramaris, a leading producer of algae-based Omega-3 oils, has been awarded the 2026 North Atlantic Seafood Forum (NASF) Sustainability Award for its innovative contributions to sustainable aquaculture feed.
The award, presented at NASF 2026, highlights Veramaris’ approach to sustainability, particularly its production of EPA and DHA Omega-3 through large-scale fermentation of marine microalgae.
This fish-free alternative has added nearly 5% to global EPA and DHA supply, reducing pressure on marine resources and supporting sustainable aquaculture and pet feed.
“We’re incredibly proud that Veramaris has won the NASF Sustainability Award 2026,” stated Mark van Nieuwland, CEO of Veramaris.
“We remain committed to enabling more sustainable aquaculture through science-driven innovation, and this recognition motivates us to push even further.”
The Sustainability Award is given to companies demonstrating measurable, industry-wide sustainability impact.
Veramaris was selected from a strong shortlist of finalists, including the Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT), a climate-focused initiative supporting carbon accounting across seafood supply chains, and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a globally recognised standard-setter for sustainable wild fisheries.
Continued commitment to aquafeed
Veramaris stood out to the jury for its innovative approach to sustainable feed production.
By producing Omega-3 oils from marine microalgae rather than wild-caught fish, the company provides a scalable, environmentally friendly alternative for aquaculture.
Veramaris is also the first microalgae oil producer certified under the joint ASC–MSC Seaweed (Algae) Standard, ensuring its products meet recognised sustainability criteria.
“Veramaris demonstrates how practical, scalable solutions can enhance sustainability in seafood production. By providing algae-based EPA and DHA as an alternative to traditional fish oil, the company reduces pressure on wild fisheries and supports feed security as global aquaculture expands,” said Carl-Emil Johannesen, NASF Chairman of the Board.
Since its commercial launch, Veramaris’ algae-based Omega-3 oils have added the equivalent of around 1.2 million tonnes of wild-caught fish to global EPA and DHA supply, significantly advancing sustainable aquafeed and reducing pressure on marine resources.
