Fennig will succeed Dana Brooks, who has led PFI for eight years

USA – The Pet Food Institute (PFI) has appointed Elise Fennig as its new president and chief executive officer, effective March 16, 2026, marking a leadership transition at the leading trade association representing U.S. pet food and treat manufacturers.
Fennig brings more than two decades of experience in international trade, agriculture policy and market access, skills that are increasingly important for the pet food sector as global demand grows and trade regulations evolve.
In announcing the appointment, they said Fennig has a“strong track record of promoting U.S. agricultural interests and expanding market opportunities,” adding that her leadership will help the institute “strengthen its voice on trade, regulatory and sustainability issues critical to the pet food industry.”
Her background includes advancing U.S. agricultural exports, navigating regulatory frameworks and supporting market development programs, experiences that position her well to lead the organisation’s advocacy efforts in both domestic and global markets, as PFI noted.
Fennig said she is honoured to take on the role at a time of opportunity and change for the sector. Excited to join the Pet Food Institute, she will work alongside its members to advance policies that support innovation, safety and global growth.
She noted that the U.S. pet food industry plays an important role in agriculture and exports, and added, “I look forward to building on that foundation to expand market access and deliver value for our members.”
Her predecessor, Brooks, said she is confident the organisation is well-positioned for the future.
“Elise’s leadership experience, collaborative approach, and commitment to supporting food makers make her exceptionally well-suited to lead PFI forward. I am proud of what we have built together with our members and look forward to seeing the organisation continue to evolve under Elise’s guidance.”
USDA MAP Funding
Her appointment comes as PFI also announced it has secured US$1.35 million in Market Access Program (MAP) funding for 2026. The funding was awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through its USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).
The MAP program supports overseas marketing and promotional activities to expand export opportunities for U.S. agricultural products, including pet food.
The grant will be used to promote U.S. pet food in 11 markets across 19 countries, including Brazil, Central America, China, India, Mexico, the Middle East (UAE and Israel), and others.
Under the award, PFI and participating pet food companies will provide matching contributions of at least 35% of the federal funds, increasing the overall investment in international market development.
PFI said the funding will help the industry strengthen its presence in key global markets, address trade barriers and promote the quality and safety of U.S.-made pet food products.
Fennig said expanding global market access will be a priority under her leadership.
“By working in partnership with USDA and our member companies, we can continue opening doors for U.S. pet food products around the world,” she said. “Our goal is to ensure that American manufacturers remain competitive and trusted in international markets.”
With new leadership and fresh export funding in place, PFI is positioning itself to support industry growth both at home and abroad in 2026 and beyond.
