Meanwhile, Veramaris has announced Mark van Nieuwland as the incoming CEO of Veramaris, effective January 1, 2026.

NETHERLANDS – Veramaris, the algae oil joint venture between dsm-firmenich and Evonik, has announced a strategic partnership with Merwetank B.V. to construct a dedicated bulk storage facility.
The new infrastructure, located in Dordrecht near Rotterdam, is designed to significantly enhance supply chain security and logistics efficiency for producers of algae-based omega-3 oils (EPA & DHA) across Europe.
Set to be operational by mid-Q4 2025, the facility represents a first-of-its-kind investment in the algae oil sector, directly supporting the rapidly increasing global demand for sustainable omega-3 sources in aquafeed.
The partnership aims to facilitate the large-volume delivery of Veramaris’ product directly to coastal feed factories, a move expected to lower transportation costs, simplify complex logistics, and reduce the supply chain’s overall carbon footprint.
Boosting efficiency and supply security
The decision to establish bulk storage near a major port addresses a core challenge for the industry: efficiently scaling up delivery of a novel ingredient.
By providing the first bulk storage and large-scale delivery option for algae oil, Veramaris is helping the aquaculture sector transition away from its traditional reliance on marine-derived fish oil.
Merwetank, a specialist in food-grade bulk logistics, will be responsible for operating the facility. The company’s expertise ensures product integrity through advanced systems.
Furthermore, while Veramaris’ algae oil is FAMI-QS certified, Merwetank’s robust certifications, FSSC 22000 and GMP+, guarantee the highest safety and quality standards across the storage and logistics phases.
Holger Kinzel, CFO/COO of Veramaris, highlighted the immediate customer benefit of the initiative.
“This new setup brings our product much closer to customers’ existing supply chains,” Kinzel stated. “It’s a great example of how we’re scaling up with our partners to support bulk deliveries and the continued growth of sustainable aquaculture.”
New leadership for the next growth phase
Coinciding with this major supply chain expansion, Veramaris has also announced a significant overhaul of its leadership team, signalling the start of its next major growth phase.
Mark van Nieuwland has been appointed as the incoming CEO of Veramaris, effective January 1, 2026.
He succeeds Gertjan de Koning, who has led the company for the past three years. van Nieuwland joined the company in early November to ensure a smooth transition. Holger Kinzel will continue in his role as CFO/COO.
In another key appointment, Ian Carr, who has been instrumental in the company’s success over the last seven years, has been promoted to Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), effective November 1.
Furthermore, Philip Eykerman, President Strategy, M&A and Transformation of dsm-firmenich, has taken over as President of the Board of Veramaris, succeeding Andre Bos.
The leadership changes come as the company seeks to deepen partnerships and unlock new opportunities, having successfully established algae oil as a mainstream ingredient in aquafeed.
The company remains focused on closing the essential omega-3 supply gap and enabling the industry to plan with greater confidence through reliable and scalable nutrition solutions.
Incoming CEO Mark van Nieuwland expressed his enthusiasm for the path ahead. “I’m honoured to take up this role, and look forward to building on the impressive track record of Veramaris as a leader in sustainable algal oil and a trusted supplier of Omega-3 EPA & DHA,” he said.
Philip Eykerman, the new Board President, offered high praise for the outgoing team, saying, “He [de Koning] has transformed Veramaris from a struggling startup into a profitable, respected industry leader and built a compelling brand.”
The company emphasised that these changes reflect its ongoing commitment to its mission to consistently deliver essential omega-3 nutrition by advancing science and collaborating with partners who feed the world.
