EFSA, European Commission launch #NoBirdFlu toolkit to combat avian influenza

With migratory birds clustering in Europe during winter months, proactive biosecurity is essential to prevent infections from entering farms.

EUROPE – The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission (EC) have unveiled a new communication toolkit, #NoBirdFlu, aimed at protecting poultry, other animals, and people from the growing threat of avian influenza across Europe.

The campaign, launched to coincide with the start of the migratory bird season, seeks to raise awareness of the importance of simple biosecurity steps, particularly for small and medium-sized farms.

The materials are designed to help prevent new outbreaks, safeguard public health, ensure food production stability, and minimise disruptions to trade.

The launch reflects a coordinated effort between EFSA and the EC to strengthen the resilience of Europe’s poultry industry against one of its most persistent threats.

EFSA emphasised that the toolkit embodies a proactive approach to preventing outbreaks before they start.

The launch of #NoBirdFlu highlights how preparedness today can prevent crises tomorrow,” said Nikolaus Kriz, EFSA’s Executive Director. “By working together, we can protect our animals, secure food systems and build resilience against future health threats. EFSA is committed to providing the scientific advice needed to keep bird flu out of European farms.

Claire Bury, Deputy Director General for Food Sustainability at the European Commission, underlined the urgency of collective action.

With winter approaching, and the threat of avian influenza rising, everyone must play their part in preventing new outbreaks. From farmers, workers and small flock holders, to vets and farm visitors, simple precautions can make a real difference in reducing the spread of this serious disease. This campaign provides practical guidance to help protect flocks and safeguard Europe’s poultry sector,” she said.

What the #NoBirdFlu toolkit offers

The toolkit includes a variety of communication resources, translated into all EU languages, to support farmers and those who interact with farms. Among its main features are:

  • An infographic with step-by-step guidance on hygiene, protective equipment, and movement control for farmers, animals, tools, workers, and visitors.
  • Posters with visual reminders of biosecurity actions for daily routines.
  • Ready-to-use content such as stickers and social media posts to extend outreach to farming communities and the wider public.

Why now?

Avian influenza outbreaks have devastating consequences, wiping out poultry flocks, disrupting supply chains, and threatening livelihoods.

With migratory birds clustering in Europe during winter months, the risk of virus spread is heightened. Proactive biosecurity is therefore essential to prevent infections from entering farms.

Every individual interacting with a farm, whether a farmer, supplier, worker, veterinarian, or visitor, has a role to play in reducing risks. The toolkit aims to instil this sense of shared responsibility through accessible and practical communication.

Looking ahead, the European Commission has also tasked EFSA with conducting research into how farmers, veterinarians, and farm workers perceive the risks of avian influenza.

The findings will help tailor future awareness campaigns and inform a broader EU-wide preparedness initiative planned for 2026, aimed at reducing the risk of future pandemics.

The success of the campaign depends on wide dissemination. Stakeholders and partners across EU Member States and beyond are encouraged to share the toolkit’s messages, reinforcing consistent biosecurity practices across the poultry sector.
