Skretting earns ASC Feed Standard Certification from DNV at Seafood Expo Global

Starting October 31, 2025, ASC-certified farms will be required to use ASC-certified feed to maintain their own certifications.

SPAIN – Skretting, a global leader in aquaculture nutrition and a business line of Nutreco, has been officially certified under the new Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Standard by independent assurance provider DNV (Det Norske Veritas).

The certification was formally awarded during a ceremony on May 8 at the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, Spain.

The achievement places Skretting at the forefront of sustainable aquafeed production as the industry braces for a significant regulatory shift: starting October 31, 2025, ASC-certified farms will be required to use ASC-certified feed to maintain their own certifications.

The ASC Feed Standard introduces one of the most rigorous frameworks to date for responsible aquafeed manufacturing.

It covers critical areas including environmental stewardship, human rights, social and labour protections, health and safety, and the ethical sourcing of raw materials.

It promotes transparency, traceability, and continuous improvement in the aquaculture industry, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and ethical seafood production,” said Stefano Crea, Global Market and Industries Director at DNV.

Skretting’s commitment to sustainability across its entire value chain is evident, and I congratulate them on achieving ASC Feed certification.”

A global footprint in sustainable aquafeed

Headquartered in Stavanger, Norway, Skretting operates in 18 countries across five continents, producing over 3 million tonnes of high-quality aquafeed annually for more than 60 species. With its stated purpose of “Feeding the Future,” the company has embedded sustainability into every stage of its operations.

At Skretting, our commitment to delivering sustainable feed begins with responsible sourcing,” said Sergio Alanis, Managing Director of Skretting’s Business Unit Southern Europe.

The ASC Feed Standard provides a robust methodology to better identify and mitigate legal, environmental and social risks associated with the raw materials we use. Importantly, the standard addresses both environmental and social impacts and offers a strong framework for upholding human rights.”

Alanis also emphasised that this certification reinforces Skretting’s role as a reliable partner for ASC-certified farmers.

We embraced the ASC Feed Standard from its inception, and we are proud to have earned this certification from DNV.”

Leading the way in Japan and beyond

This latest certification adds to a growing list of ASC Feed achievements for Skretting worldwide. In March, Skretting Japan made history by becoming the first feed mill in the country to achieve ASC certification.

The certified facility in Imari, Saga Prefecture, manufactures feed for a wide range of marine and freshwater species, including trout, salmon, seabream, and tropical finfish.

Gihyeon Park, General Manager at Skretting Japan, praised the dedication of his team. “This certification is not a final goal but the beginning of a more sustainable future,” he said. “It aligns perfectly with our mission of feeding the future responsibly and strengthens our relationships with suppliers to drive more accountability across the supply chain.

Koji Yamamoto, General Manager Japan at ASC, echoed that sentiment, calling the achievement a “major milestone for responsible seafood farming.”

In addition to Spain and Japan, Skretting’s plants in Chile, Ecuador, Honduras, Canada, and Norway have successfully met the ASC Feed Standard through a series of rigorous audits.

Skretting Chile’s Osorno facility was the world’s first salmon feed plant to gain the certification, setting a precedent for others in the sector.
