dsm-firmenich, Allix join forces to drive sustainable feed formulation

At the heart of the partnership is the development of a new sustainability module within the Allix platform, powered by Sustell™.

BELGIUM – dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has announced a strategic partnership with feed formulation software leader Allix, developed by A-Systems, to advance sustainability in the animal nutrition sector.

The collaboration aims to reduce the environmental footprint of animal feed by integrating dsm-firmenich’s lifecycle assessment platform, Sustell™, into the Allix software ecosystem.

The partnership, unveiled this week, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to make the animal protein supply chain more transparent and environmentally responsible.

By embedding sustainability tools directly into feed formulation processes, the two companies are empowering feed manufacturers and nutritionists to evaluate and reduce their emissions at the source.

At the heart of the partnership is the development of a new sustainability module within the Allix platform, powered by Sustell™.

This add-on will allow users to measure the environmental impact of their feeds in real time, seamlessly ingesting feed formulation data into the Sustell™ platform while operating within the familiar Allix interface. The module is expected to become available later this year.

Feed is a vital component in the food value chain,” said David Nickell, Vice President of Sustainability & Business Solutions for Animal Nutrition & Health at dsm-firmenich.

By combining the innovative Sustell™ platform with Allix’s established feed formulation software, we are unifying our joint commitment to developing the entire farm-to-fork data ecosystem.

Sustell™, a leader in lifecycle assessment (LCA) technology, allows users to evaluate emissions from feed production to animal protein output, facilitating decision-making across the supply chain.

Sustell™‘s LCA footprinting platform is essential throughout the value chain to address sustainability challenges and unlock significant value,” Nickell added.

Echoing this commitment, Bruno Duranthon of A-Systems SAS stated, “We are proud to partner Allix’s feed formulation software with Sustell™ to revolutionise the way our users measure and manage their environmental footprint in feed production. Our partnership will contribute to a more sustainable future in feed and food.”

The integration is poised to support a wide range of stakeholders, from feed producers and farmers to food companies and retailers, by enabling accurate emissions reporting and fostering improved sustainable practices across the board.

dsm-firmenich publishes its Q1 2025 World Mycotoxin Survey

Meanwhile, dsm-firmenich also released its Q1 2025 World Mycotoxin Survey, offering new insights into the risks posed by mycotoxin contamination globally.

Spanning over 70 countries and analysing more than 30,000 tests from nearly 6,000 samples, the survey revealed that 94% of samples from China and South Asia showed high levels of mycotoxin risk, the highest globally.

Moreover, 76% of all tested samples contained more than one mycotoxin, indicating widespread co-contamination.

The top three most prevalent mycotoxins detected were fumonisins (99%), deoxynivalenol (87%), and zearalenone (67%). A growing concern noted in the report is the rise of masked and emerging mycotoxins.

In advanced tests using the Spectrum 380® analysis platform, up to 40 different mycotoxins were detected in a single sample.

Spectrum 380®, developed by the Department of Agrobiotechnology (IFA-Tulln) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna and conducted in collaboration with Performance Solutions plus Biomin, is the most advanced mycotoxin analysis method currently available. It identifies over 800 mycotoxins and metabolites, offering an unmatched view into contamination risks.

As climate change and evolving agricultural practices continue to influence mycotoxin prevalence, the data underscores the need for vigilance and innovation in safeguarding feed and animal health.
