CCPA adopts dsm-firmenich’s Sustell platform to help livestock producers cut emissions

FRANCE – The CCPA Group has adopted Sustell®, the environmental modelling platform developed by dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, to help livestock producers and feed manufacturers measure and reduce the carbon footprint of animal production through science-based feed and nutrition strategies.

The French animal nutrition cooperative said the platform will strengthen its ability to support customers as the livestock industry faces growing pressure to improve environmental performance while maintaining productivity and profitability.

The decision, made in 2024, enables CCPA to provide farm-gate carbon footprint assessments using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology aligned with internationally recognised standards, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) frameworks.

Sustell evaluates emissions across the entire production system, taking into account feed composition, animal performance, farming practices and other production inputs. 

The platform allows users to compare different nutritional strategies and identify opportunities to lower greenhouse gas emissions without compromising technical or economic performance.

“The decarbonisation of livestock production sectors first and foremost relies on the ability to measure in order to act,” said Marina Panhéleux, Sustainability R&I Manager at the CCPA Group.

“Through environmental modelling, we help our customers objectively assess the impact of their nutritional and technical choices and identify the most effective levers to reconcile environmental, economic and zootechnical performance.”

According to the CCPA, modelling carried out by its Technical and R&I teams shows that optimised feeding strategies can reduce the carbon footprint of livestock production by up to 15% per kilogram of animal product at the farm gate.

Several of the company’s nutritional products have already undergone third-party verified life cycle assessments.

Its Turboviv® solution reduced climate change impact by 6.9% per kilogram of milk while improving feed efficiency by 3.1%, delivering a reported return on investment of between 4:1 and 5:1.

Feedstim® Dairy achieved a 5.5% reduction in emissions per kilogram of milk while increasing milk production by 6.7%, whereas Butirex® C4 lowered emissions from broiler production by 3.1% per kilogram of live weight and improved organic matter digestibility by 3.5%.

Feed sector under growing pressure to decarbonise

The adoption reflects increasing demand across the feed industry for tools that help quantify the environmental impact of feed formulations and livestock production.

Feed manufacturers are facing mounting requirements from retailers, processors and regulators to provide verified sustainability data as livestock supply chains work toward climate targets. 

Environmental modelling platforms such as Sustell are increasingly being used to identify lower-emission feed formulations, improve feed efficiency and support sustainability reporting.

CCPA said reliable environmental data will also strengthen the credibility of environmental labelling for animal products by enabling producers to provide transparent and verifiable information to consumers.

The company believes combining nutritional innovation with robust environmental assessment will help livestock producers reduce emissions while maintaining productivity and economic performance.
