ADM recalls select cattle feed due to copper, zinc imbalances

USA – ADM Animal Nutrition, a division of ADM, has issued a recall for select pelleted cattle nutrition feed products following concerns over potentially harmful mineral imbalances. 

The recall, announced by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), affects products distributed between January 16 and February 27, 2025, across six states: Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa, Georgia, and Ohio.

The recall stems from elevated levels of copper in most affected products, while one product—GROFAST32—was found to have lower-than-represented levels of zinc. 

These discrepancies, discovered during a routine internal check, prompted ADM to initiate an immediate investigation and recall effort.

Excessive copper intake can lead to chronic toxicity in cattle, manifesting as anorexia, abdominal pain, dehydration, diarrhea, and depression. Meanwhile, insufficient zinc levels can negatively impact feed intake, efficiency, and growth. 

While no illnesses or deficiency-related symptoms have been reported to date, ADM has taken proactive measures to mitigate any potential health risks to livestock.

Recall details and customer guidance

A total of 33 lot numbers are included in this recall. ADM is actively notifying customers and distributors while ensuring that affected products are removed from retail shelves. 

Livestock owners who have purchased the recalled feed are urged to immediately discontinue use and return the products for a replacement or refund. A list of the affected products can be found here.

In a statement to news outlets, ADM Animal Nutrition reassured customers that the issue has since been corrected. 

The company emphasised its commitment to product quality and regulatory compliance, stating, “We have been working closely with the FDA regarding a manufacturing issue identified in February 2025 that resulted in some minerals being present in affected feeds at levels different from what is shown on the product label.”

ADM has been diligent in issuing product recalls whenever there are issues in its feed products. 

For example, last year, an equipment failure at its Quincy, Illinois, manufacturing facility resulted in various feed products with elevated magnesium, sodium, calcium, chloride, and phosphorus levels, prompting an immediate recall of the affected batches.
