KENYA – Rio Fish, in partnership with Koolboks, a French company specializing in solar-powered, cost-effective refrigeration, is launching an initiative to improve fish storage and preservation for traders in Migori County.
The project aims to provide modern cooling solutions to tackle storage challenges that often lead to fish spoilage and financial losses. By introducing advanced refrigeration technology, the initiative will help extend the shelf life of fish, ensuring better quality for both sellers and consumers.
As part of the rollout, a benchmarking exercise will assess existing storage methods, identify gaps, and explore areas for improvement.
Rio Fish and Koolboks anticipate that improved cooling systems will help traders reduce waste, increase earnings, and remain competitive in the market.
Beyond storage solutions, Rio Fish is also advancing conservation efforts through a separate partnership with Plus Fish and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI).
Recently, the company hosted Michael Cooper from Plus Fish and Dr. Orina from KMFRI for discussions on protecting indigenous fish species in Lake Victoria.
Their collaboration focuses on addressing threats such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change, which have put local fish populations at risk.
The introduction of non-native species has further disrupted the lake’s ecosystem, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable fishing practices.
The conservation initiative will explore methods like habitat restoration and controlled fishing to help stabilize fish stocks.
Additionally, efforts will include working closely with local communities to raise awareness and implement strategies that promote responsible fishing while ensuring long-term economic benefits.
Preserving native fish species is vital, as many communities around the lake depend on them for both food and income.
Scientists and conservationists involved in the project believe that combining research with community engagement is key to long-term success.
