UK – To strengthen its foothold in the European seafood market, Polish salmon giant Suempol has acquired 100% of Copernus Ltd, a prominent fresh fish supplier in the United Kingdom.
This acquisition marks a significant step for Suempol, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, as it looks to diversify its product offerings and tap into new markets.
Founded in 1989, Suempol is Poland’s oldest producer of smoked salmon and one of the largest in the world, with its headquarters and main production facility located in Bielsk Podlaski.
The company’s rise to prominence has been driven by a series of successful acquisitions abroad, expanding its reach and product range. Suempol’s portfolio, which already includes salmon, will now expand further with the addition of species such as cod and haddock.
Copernus Ltd, based in Hull—one of the key centres of the UK’s fishing industry—boasts a production facility that produces an impressive 52 million portions of seafood annually.
This acquisition will allow Suempol to leverage Copernus’s well-established infrastructure and expertise in fresh fish supply to strengthen its presence in the UK market.
Maciej Jaworowski, Vice President of Suempol’s Management Board, highlighted this acquisition’s significance as a pivotal element in the company’s long-term growth strategy.
“The integration of Copernus into the Suempol family is a key element of our strategy focused on expanding into new markets,” said Jaworowski.
He added that the move would enable Suempol to offer a wider variety of seafood products, catering to the growing demand for diverse fish species in international markets.
As Suempol looks to the future, this acquisition will not only broaden its product range but also position the company to capitalise on the increased consumer interest in sustainable and diverse seafood options.
“We are very pleased that Copernus has joined the Suempol family, and we hope that through our combined efforts and determination, we will achieve even greater success,” Jaworowski concluded.
With the addition of Copernus and its Hull-based facility, Suempol is set to expand its influence in the UK market while enhancing its reputation as a global leader in the seafood industry.
The acquisition underscores Suempol’s commitment to growth, innovation, and delivering high-quality seafood products to consumers worldwide.
