Cargill, ADM advance postbiotic solutions for livestock and companion animals

Together, these developments reflect a continued focus on meeting growing global demand for advanced micronutrition solutions.

USA – Cargill Animal Nutrition & Health (ANH) is strengthening its postbiotic production capabilities in the United States with a $3.5 million investment at its Cedar Rapids, Iowa, facility, responding to growing global demand for advanced animal health solutions.

The upgrades, completed in February 2026, expand the facility’s postbiotic fermentation capacity, supporting a range of products within Cargill’s Micronutrition & Health Solutions (MHS) portfolio, including technologies used in the XPC product line.

According to the company, the investment ensures consistent product quality and reliable supply, enabling producers worldwide to access science-based solutions that support animal health, performance, and efficiency.

Nutrition solutions produced at Cedar Rapids are shipped domestically and internationally, reflecting the company’s commitment to meeting increasing global demand.

“This investment allows us to continue delivering innovative postbiotic solutions that improve animal health and production outcomes,” said a spokesperson for Cargill ANH.

The facility upgrades follow Cargill’s expansion of its Engerwitzdorf manufacturing site in Austria in late 2025, underscoring the company’s continued focus on micronutrition and functional feed solutions.

ADM advances canine postbiotic research

The growing interest in postbiotics is not limited to livestock.

ADM Animal Health has recently published a peer-reviewed clinical study in the journal Animals showing that PRIOME® Metabolic Health (PRIOME® MH), in both probiotic and heat-treated postbiotic forms, can support metabolic health in adult dogs.

The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, led by Dr Sophie Nixon, Head of Clinical Research for Pet and Animal Wellbeing, evaluated 45 healthy adult dogs through phases of induced weight gain and weight loss.

During the weight-loss phase, dogs receiving PRIOME® MH supplementation demonstrated a significant reduction in postprandial blood glucose compared with placebo, highlighting the potential role of postbiotics in supporting canine metabolic health.

“Metabolic health is a major determinant of longevity and quality of life,” said Dr Nixon. “Our study shows that PRIOME® MH postbiotic can help manage blood glucose and support overall metabolic balance in dogs, a health area historically underserved by biotic ingredients.”

The ADM trial adds to the company’s growing portfolio of peer-reviewed canine postbiotic studies and reinforces the increasing role of functional nutrition in companion animal health.

With rising demand for functional pet supplements, postbiotics are emerging as a promising tool to support weight management, glucose regulation, and overall well-being in pets.

Together, these developments from Cargill and ADM illustrate the expanding role of postbiotics across the animal health industry, from large-scale livestock production to targeted companion animal applications.

While Cargill focuses on scaling production to meet global feed demand, ADM is advancing scientific evidence for functional pet nutrition, highlighting the complementary ways postbiotics are shaping the future of animal health.

As global interest in animal and pet health solutions grows, these efforts reflect a broader trend: bridging innovation in production with evidence-based nutritional research to deliver tangible benefits to animals and producers worldwide.
