Royal Canin expands breed‑specific nutrition with corgi diets

The new Corgi Adult and Puppy diets offer breed‑specific nutrition for bones, coat, and digestion.

USA – Royal Canin, part of Mars PetCare, has marked National Welsh Corgi Day by launching its new Corgi Adult and Puppy diets, further extending its leadership in breed‑specific nutrition.

The company has built a portfolio of more than 60 breed formulas across dogs and cats, ranging from German Shepherds to Maine Coons.

The Corgi diets are designed with a precise kibble shape to suit the breed’s jaw and are enriched with nutrients to support bone and joint health, skin and coat condition, and digestive efficiency.

“As pioneers of breed-specific nutrition, Royal Canin has always prioritised the individual needs of pets when it comes to developing nutrition, and the launch of our Corgi diet is the latest example of our science-driven approach to breed-specific nutrition,” said Kira Best, general manager, Healthy Pet & Pet Speciality.

This move highlights Royal Canin’s long‑standing strategy of tailoring nutrition to the precise needs of individual breeds, supported by more than five decades of research.

The Corgi launch raises the question of whether competitors are following the same path.

Royal Canin’s portfolio remains one of the most extensive in breed‑specific dog nutrition, with formulas designed for unique breed characteristics and needs.

Competitors with breed‑specific dog food products

Among the major players, Eukanuba has developed a range of breed‑specific dog foods formulated for distinct breeds such as Dachshund, Yorkshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Golden Retriever, Labrador, German Shepherd and others.

Their formulas emphasise joint support, digestive performance, and coat health, mirroring Royal Canin’s approach but on a smaller scale.

Purina Pro Plan, another global brand, has focused more on size and lifestyle segmentation, small-breed, large-breed, active dogs, rather than on strict breed formulas.

Hill’s Science Diet has focused on life-stage and condition‑specific nutrition, such as puppy, senior, sensitive stomach, or weight management, without entering the breed‑specific category.

Beyond the large competitors, niche companies and startups are experimenting with precision feeding.

BARK Food has introduced breed‑specific dog diets for selected breeds, including formulas developed for Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas and Labradors, designed to address key dietary and functional needs.

This represents diversification into breed-customised nutrition outside established legacy brands.

Market context and trends

Breed‑specific diets are part of a wider trend toward tailored pet nutrition.

The industry has moved beyond generic formulas to focus on factors such as size, age, lifestyle, and health conditions.

Breed diets represent the next level of precision, addressing genetic predispositions, anatomical differences, and behavioural traits.

For example, kibble shape and texture can be adjusted to suit jaw structure, while nutrient levels can be calibrated to support common breed health concerns.

This approach appeals to owners who see their pets as unique individuals and want diets that reflect that uniqueness.

“By recreating iconic pieces of art out of our products, the kibble isn’t just the medium; it’s the message. We have the opportunity to highlight the unique shape and texture that is crafted for each specific breed’s diets across our portfolio,”  said Kira.
