Skretting adds three new ASC-certified feed plants in major global milestone

From October 31, 2025, ASC-certified farms will be required to only use ASC-certified feed to maintain their own certification status.

GLOBAL – Skretting has strengthened its global leadership in sustainable aquafeed production with the certification of three additional feed factories under the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Standard in July 2025.

With the inclusion of plants in Italy, Vietnam, and Australia, Skretting now operates 10 ASC-certified facilities worldwide.

The ASC Feed Standard, launched in June 2021, sets one of the most rigorous global benchmarks for responsibly produced aquafeed.

It evaluates feed mills on environmental, social, and ethical sourcing criteria, requiring traceability, transparency, and strict compliance with human rights and labour protections.

Skretting marked several national milestones in July. On July 7, Skretting Italy became the first feed facility in the country to be ASC-certified.

Two weeks later, Skretting Vietnam followed, becoming the first in Vietnam to receive certification for both shrimp and fish feed.

The month concluded with Skretting Australia earning the country’s first ASC feed certification on July 28.

These certifications are more than just compliance milestones; they reflect Skretting’s deep commitment to responsible practices that benefit not only our customers, but also the communities, ecosystems, and supply chains we are part of,” the company stated.

Jorge Diaz, Sustainability & Communications Director at Skretting, emphasised the broader implications: “Our purpose is feeding the future, and an important part of this is strengthening our position as a leader within sustainability.

By continuing to expand the number of ASC-certified operations we have across the globe, Skretting is offering assurance to all its customers and partners, and creating real value in the aquaculture industry.”

Global context and regulatory pressure

The expansion of ASC-certified feed mills comes at a pivotal moment for aquaculture. Starting October 31, 2025, ASC-certified farms will be required to use ASC-certified feed to maintain their own certification status. Skretting’s expanded network is poised to play a critical role in helping producers meet this requirement.

The company’s certification journey began in early 2024 at its Osorno plant in Chile, the world’s first salmon feed mill to meet ASC standards. Subsequent certifications followed in Ecuador, Honduras, Canada, Norway, Japan, and Spain.

According to DNV’s Global Market and Industries Director, Stefano Crea, “Skretting’s commitment to sustainability across its entire value chain is evident, and I congratulate them on achieving ASC Feed certification. It promotes transparency, traceability, and continuous improvement in the aquaculture industry, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and ethical seafood production.”

Commitment from the top

Headquartered in Stavanger, Norway, Skretting operates across 18 countries and produces over 3 million tonnes of feed annually for more than 60 aquaculture species. Its focus on sustainable sourcing and manufacturing is central to its business strategy.

The ASC Feed Standard provides a robust methodology to better identify and mitigate legal, environmental and social risks associated with the raw materials we use,” said Sergio Alanis, Managing Director of Skretting Southern Europe.

Importantly, the standard addresses both environmental and social impacts and offers a strong framework for upholding human rights.
