The ASC Feed Standard sets a high bar for sustainability, requiring certified facilities to meet rigorous criteria in areas such as responsible raw material sourcing, labour practices, traceability, and environmental management.
NORWAY – BioMar, a renowned provider of high-quality aquafeed, has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey with its Norwegian feed production facilities in Myre and Karmøy earning the coveted Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Certification.
The certification, granted following comprehensive audits in early 2025, positions BioMar to support Norway’s salmon sector ahead of new ASC requirements set to take effect in October 2025.
The newly certified Norwegian sites now join BioMar’s global network of ASC-approved facilities, which includes operations in Ecuador, Chile, the United Kingdom, and Costa Rica.
This growing list underscores the company’s commitment to responsible feed production and environmental stewardship across the aquaculture supply chain.
“This certification is the result of our long-term efforts to ensure that feed production for aquaculture is done sustainably, both for the environment and for people. We are proud to offer our customers feed that meets the strictest requirements for environmental and social responsibility,” said Håvard Jørgensen, managing director of BioMar Norway, in a press release.
The ASC Feed Standard sets a high bar for sustainability, requiring certified facilities to meet rigorous criteria in areas such as responsible raw material sourcing, labour practices, traceability, and environmental management.
By securing compliance, BioMar ensures that Norwegian farmers continue to have access to ASC-compliant feed, enabling them to align with evolving certification requirements and meet market expectations for sustainably farmed seafood.
“This certification enables BioMar to support the Norwegian salmon sector with locally produced ASC-compliant feed,” the company noted. “It will help farms prepare for the October 2025 deadline, when ASC certification will require feed sourced from ASC-certified facilities.”
BioMar Costa Rica achieves ASC Feed Certification
The announcement comes shortly after BioMar’s Costa Rica plant also secured ASC Feed Certification, marking the first facility in the country to reach this benchmark.
The achievement, announced in April 2025, solidifies BioMar’s position as a key supplier of sustainable aquafeeds across Central America and the Caribbean, serving producers of shrimp, tilapia, and marine species.
“With this certification, we will be able to provide access to ASC-compliant feed in the region and support our customers’ efforts to meet the growing demand for sustainable seafood in global markets,” said Jorge Vargas, Managing Director of BioMar Costa Rica.
The Costa Rica certification reflects BioMar’s broader sustainability agenda and furthers its support for environmentally conscious aquaculture.
The company said each new certification is a step in its strategy to empower customers and promote best practices industry-wide.
“Each certification represents another step in BioMar’s broader strategy of supporting responsible aquaculture practices, empowering customers to meet environmental, social, and market expectations,” the company stated.
Aisla Jones, Feed Engagement and UK Markets Manager at ASC, praised the Costa Rica milestone, saying, “It’s fantastic to see BioMar achieve yet another milestone with their feed mill in Costa Rica attaining ASC Feed Certification – the first in the country.”
She added that such certifications ensure transparency and accountability, reinforcing sustainable practices throughout the aquaculture value chain.
