Mondi creates sustainable pet food packaging for Saga Nutrition

FRANCE – Global packaging leader Mondi has partnered with French pet food manufacturer Saga Nutrition to launch a recyclable solution for dry pet food products. 

The collaboration introduces a mono-material packaging solution called re/cycle FlexiBag, replacing the previously used multi-material plastic that was non-recyclable.

The initiative directly supports both companies’ environmental goals by aligning with CEFLEX recycling guidelines and Mondi’s own Path to Circularity Scorecard. 

It also addresses the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly alternatives without compromising product quality or functionality.

“As consumer demand for sustainable solutions grows, we are excited to work with Saga Nutrition to deliver packaging that truly supports a circular economy when it comes to pet food,” said Olivier Werbrouck, Regional Sales Manager at Consumer Flexibles France, Mondi.

The re/cycle FlexiBag is available for products weighing 3kg or more and includes high-performance barrier properties that effectively block out moisture, fat, and odours. 

Its durability ensures safe overseas transportation, while its easy-seal features and convenient storage design meet the practical needs of pet owners.

Jérôme de Solliers, CEO at Saga Nutrition, emphasized the importance of the shift. “This collaboration with Mondi is a key milestone in our sustainability journey. By transitioning to recyclable mono-material packaging, we’re contributing to a circular economy while maintaining the high quality our customers trust,” he said.

More sustainable solutions in the UK

This development is part of Mondi’s broader packaging transformation strategy. Earlier this year, the company partnered with German chemical giant Evonik to introduce sustainable paper bags in the UK. 

The new design is made of high-porosity kraft paper and is 30% lighter than previous versions, combining durability with eco-conscious design.

The two-layer bags passed Evonik’s stringent performance tests, while Mondi evaluated the packaging using its Product Impact Assessment system. 

With commercial use now underway, the collaboration is being hailed as a model for how corporate partnerships can drive innovation in carbon reduction and circularity.

Mondi unveils recyclable PE-based packaging for pet food

Mondi further expanded its sustainable offerings in 2024 with the launch of FlexiBag Reinforced, a recyclable mono-polyethylene (PE) packaging range explicitly tailored for pet food applications. Designed with enhanced mechanical strength, the line offers a viable alternative to traditional multi-material laminates.

This innovation delivers customisable features including varying thickness, structural strength, and barrier levels to suit different product needs.

The bags offer medium to high protection against moisture, oxygen, and fats, which are essential for maintaining the freshness of pet food.

“Mondi recognises the increasing emphasis on PCR materials driven by future regulatory requirements, and as a market leader in sustainable pet food packaging, we are making every effort to secure a sufficient upstream supply of PCR material for our customers,” said Dirk Gabriel, Mondi’s Chief Operating Officer for Consumer Flexibles.

A notable highlight of FlexiBag Reinforced is its ability to include post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, reducing dependence on virgin plastics. 

Mera, a family-run German pet food producer, has already adopted the packaging for its vegan dry dog food, integrating 35% PCR content in its 10kg packs. The transition required no equipment changes.

“Working with our long-term, trusted partner Mondi meant that these new dog food products will be packed in a way that enables us to continue to create harmony between our furry friends and their environment,” said Enes Tajic, Purchasing Manager at Mera.
