NIGERIA – The Nigerian government has partnered with Brazil to introduce advanced livestock genetics, modern feeding techniques, and improved disease management strategies in the country’s livestock sector.
Minister of Livestock Development Alhaji Idi Maiha disclosed this US$2.5 billion agreement during the Nigeria-Brazil Trade Mission in Abuja on 28th January.
He said the partnership will also support the transportation of livestock to international markets.
Maiha said Nigeria’s livestock industry is being modernised to make it more competitive globally.
He added that the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has drawn interest from local and international investors looking to explore the country’s agricultural potential.
Maiha explained that Nigeria could benefit from Brazil’s experience in agricultural development and reiterated the government’s plan to strengthen trade relations with Brazil, particularly in agriculture and livestock.
Additionally, Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria Carlos Garcete announced that both countries will sign a US$1.2 billion Memorandum of Understanding in February under the Green Imperative Programme.
He said Brazil would supply Nigeria with tractors and other agricultural equipment to enhance food production and security.
Committee frown over livestock development budget
Meanwhile, the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on Livestock Development recently flagged the N11.8 billion (US$7.57) budget proposed for the newly created Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as grossly inadequate.
Tasked with addressing the critical challenges in Nigeria’s livestock sector, the ministry is struggling to launch effectively under its current budgetary constraints.
The Federal Government’s 2025 Appropriation Bill allocated N10 billion for capital expenditure and N1.8 billion (US$1.15 million) for overhead costs for the ministry.
During a budget defence session, Minister of Livestock Development Idi Maiha presented the ministry’s case before the National Assembly, highlighting significant gaps that hinder the ministry’s functionality.
Established only three months ago, the ministry is still laying its foundational structures. Departments transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have yet to settle fully.
The ministry operates from a temporary office provided by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), as negotiations with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration for permanent office accommodation are ongoing.
