UK’s largest oyster hatchery receives ASC certification 

UK – Morecambe Bay Oysters, the largest oyster hatchery in the UK, has recently achieved the prestigious Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification, a testament to its commitment to sustainable and responsible aquaculture practices. 

This certification marks a major milestone for the company, which is part of the Associated Seafoods group. It reinforces its role as an innovator in the aquaculture industry.

The Morecambe Bay hatchery dates back to 1883 and has long been a symbol of excellence in oyster farming. 

With the ASC accreditation, it now stands as a leader in adopting sustainable practices that protect local ecosystems and contribute to the aquaculture sector’s broader environmental goals. 

Given the increasing challenges posed by climate change and other environmental disruptions, the importance of adopting rigorous standards in food production has never been greater.

The ASC certification is particularly significant because it is granted only to operations that can demonstrate a neutral or positive impact on the ecosystems in which they operate. 

For Morecambe Bay Oysters, the farm refrains from using harmful chemicals and relies on the natural feeding habits of oysters, which consume marine plankton, eliminating the need for additional feed.
