Cargill bolsters U.S. pet food market presence with acquisition of two mills

USA – Cargill, a global leader in agribusiness and commodity trading, has strengthened its foothold in the U.S. feed and pet food market by acquiring two feed mills from Compana Pet Brands, one in Denver, Colorado, and the other in Kansas City, Kansas.

Compana Pet Brands, a global leader in pet care and nutrition based in St. Louis, manufactures and markets over 20 household brands dedicated to improving the lives of pets and their families.

The acquisition, finalised on September 3, 2024, is part of Cargill’s strategic efforts to grow its Animal Nutrition and Health business in the western and central U.S. regions. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

This acquisition enhances Cargill’s production and distribution capabilities, enabling the company to serve a wide range of customers better, including extensive farming and ranching operations and ag retailers focused on backyard farmers and pet owners.

Mariano Berdegue, Senior Vice President for Cargill’s Animal Nutrition & Health Americas, emphasised the importance of this move, stating, “These two feed mills are a perfect fit for our business in the U.S. and will help us position for long-term growth while serving both large and small-scale customers.

The Denver facility, which brings more than 35 employees into the Cargill fold, will undergo modernisation to become a flagship feed mill.

With its dedicated packing lines, the mill will enable Cargill to expand its product offerings for ag retail customers and pet owners, particularly in backyard farming.

The mill’s increased capacity will also allow Cargill to meet the needs of larger farming and ranching operations in the region.

The Kansas City mill, located close to Cargill’s existing feed facility in the area, further strengthens the company’s ability to supply customers in the region. The proximity of the two mills ensures continuity in production and growth for the business.

Greg Pearson, CEO of Compana Pet Brands, highlighted the acquisition’s mutual benefits, saying, “Cargill will continue to manufacture our products, and we look forward to working together in the years ahead.

This acquisition expands Cargill’s ability to offer a comprehensive range of products and services in animal nutrition, performance, and health, catering to dairy, livestock, and pet feed segments.
