Calysta’s FeedKind Pet now available to European pet food manufacturers

EUROPE – Calysta, a biotechnology company headquartered in California in the USA, has officially introduced its FeedKind Pet protein to the European pet food market.

This non-GMO protein, which contains no animal or plant ingredients in its production, is now available for use in dry kibble, tinned food, and pet treats.

The first shipment of this innovative protein has been dispatched to Calysta’s warehouse in Poland, marking a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion.

FeedKind Pet protein is created through a natural fermentation process that utilises minimal water and no agricultural land, making it an environmentally friendly option for pet food manufacturers.

This highly digestible protein boasts a complete amino acid profile, ensuring it meets pets’ nutritional needs while also being kind to the planet.

Calysseo, a joint venture between Calysta and Adisseo, produces the protein at a commercial scale and operates two of the world’s largest fermenters, each with a 10,000-tonne capacity, in Chongqing, China.

According to Herman Sloot, vice president of commercial development at Calysta, FeedKind Pet is uniquely positioned to meet the growing demand for high-quality, animal-free protein in pet diets.

Europe’s pet food sector now has the option to choose a fermented protein that is nutritious and kind to the environment,” Sloot stated, highlighting the product’s appeal to pet owners who prioritise health and sustainability.

FeedKind Pet has already gained GRAS status for use in aquaculture feeds and is expected to receive similar approvals for pet food applications soon.

The protein was first showcased in May 2024 at Interzoo, where Dr. Clauder introduced Trainee dog snacks made with FeedKind Pet.

These air-dried treats are formulated with postbiotic properties that promote gut health, offering a complete amino acid profile tailored for dogs.

As the first vegetarian protein of its kind to be available in commercial quantities, FeedKind Pet offers excellent palatability and acceptance for both dogs and cats while supporting a healthy gut.

The initial shipments to European pet food producers have been completed, signalling the start of what Calysta and its partners anticipate will be a robust international supply chain.

Alan Shaw, CEO and co-founder of Calysta, emphasised the significance of this launch, stating, “FeedKind protein is the culmination of 10 years of hard work and brings a disruptive innovation to both the aquaculture and pet food industries at a scale that matters.”
