USA – U.S.-based pet food ingredient supplier Scoular and Borneo-based dried seaweed producer Seadling have announced an exclusive agreement to introduce fermented dried seaweed powder to the North American pet food industry.
This innovative ingredient is poised to enhance pet health, offering a range of functional benefits that cater to the growing demand for healthier and more sustainable pet food options.
Seaweed, often celebrated as nature’s superfood, is gaining traction as a pet food ingredient due to its myriad health benefits.
According to Mintel’s US Pet Food Marketing Report, nearly 70% of pet food buyers are interested in products that promise functional health benefits, making this a timely addition.
Dr Birdie Scott Padam, Head of Product for Seadling, highlights the seaweed powder’s comprehensive advantages. These include aiding skin, coat, gut, and dental health while also supporting brain function, bone development, and cardiovascular health.
Moreover, the powder provides essential minerals and vitamins, such as vitamin K2 and potassium, often lacking in traditional pet diets.
Its binding capabilities and manufacturing compatibility make it an ideal ingredient for creating consistent, clean-label products.
Meeting consumer demand for health and sustainability
Evan Ibach, Senior Merchant for Scoular Pet, expressed enthusiasm about bringing this on-trend ingredient to North American manufacturers.
“Pet parents increasingly are seeking pet food that boosts pet health and vitality,” he noted, emphasising the growing consumer interest in health-focused pet products.
In addition to health benefits, sustainability is a key concern for today’s consumers. According to NIQ’s Green Divide Report, 70% of consumers prioritise sustainability more than two years ago when selecting products.
Seadling’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its farming practices, which prioritise cultivation over wild harvesting. This approach ensures a consistent product and minimises environmental impact, helping preserve marine ecosystems.
Simon Davis, founder and CEO of Seadling, underscored the company’s dedication to sustainability.
“Sustainability is the heart of our business,” Davis stated. “Our mission to elevate seaweed as a sustainable source of next-generation ingredients is inspired by the vision of a vibrant and healthy ocean supporting life on land.”
